It's both; the dessert was so named because it resembles the fungus.

The worlds most expensive food, costing more than a thousand dollars a pound at times. It is a fungus a mushroom that grows on the roots of oak trees under the ground. It has an earthy musky smell and they use pigs and dogs to sniff them out to harvest. Elm, chestnut, willow and pine trees also have truffles and Oregon has truffle mushrooms but they are not near as pungent or treasured as the classic Italian, French Slovenian and Croation truffle.
Ooooh I just looked up the "candy" truffles, now I'm going to make some the recipies are so decadent and yummy sounding!

What is a truffle? Can be a chocolate bon bon, a dessert, or a mushroom, rare, hard to find, musty odour, expensive and I find an acquired taste. Not everyone likes it, but most like bon bons and desserts.
