There are two kinds of cough medications: those that stop you from coughing, and those that loosen the gunk in your lungs up so you can cough it out (or a combination thereof). The ones that stop you from coughing are called antitussives, and the ones that liquefy secretions so you can cough them up are called expectorants. Both of these are available over the counter.

One might think that the goal is to stop the cough, but the main goal medically is to get the yucky stuff out of your chest, since it provides a breeding ground for other bacteria. You might want to see a doctor. Do you have a dry cough or do you have the kind of cough where you are coughing stuff up. Did you have drainage before and did it have a color to it. Clear drainage is ok, but when it starts getting yellow then that is a sign of an infection. You may or may not need antibiotics. Your body can fight off some things. Green means INFECTION and sometimes your body needs help getting rid of stuff before it gets worse.

If it is just a dry nagging cough then go to the drug store and get the antitussives. If it is a loose cough with stuff coming up get the expectorant to help liquify the stuff to make it easier to cough up.

If your nose if runny get something to dry it up.

I used NyQuil and cough drops until it went away. That was about 5 days.

Make sure you don't have something worse than just a cough, like bronchitis or pneumonia.

Try Buckley's - it tastes something awful, but it works wonders.
Might also consider calling your doctor, you might have something more severe such as bronchitis.

Check out Buckley's on MySpace:
