You can use just about anything- Live Bait or Artificial Bait (hard or soft). Thing about fish is ...If they are hungry, they will just about hit anything of any size. I once caught a mess of "sandies" on a beer tab wrapped around a hook.

Other responders have given some pretty good ideas already, but noticed ya' had Cheese listed on your post, best bet with that is good old Velveeta. Nightcrawlers be somewhat of the universal bait and works well with bout' any freshwater type species ie., Trout, Cats, Pan Fish (Bluegill, Crappie, Perch etc.) and Bass. Live Minnows aka "Shiners" work well also, Link below will give good fundamentals for the begineer. Has got a lot of great stuff so go thru the entire site, might add that there's a pop up (ain't nothin' ta' fret about though). Good luck and "Fish On", to ya' ;)...

Well you've got two main types artificial and real bait, i think that you have an equal chance of catching using either live bait or dead bait as well as plugs, and various other jelly baits available such as Berkley gulp available here

As for bait i like chicken liver for catfish and also minnows either live or dead, live is better tough, kept in an aerated bait bucket.

I don't believe you can use just any bait. I would give prawns and shrimp a try. They tend to generally work well.

I just want to let you all know that the fishing course that I'm selling, I've lowered it to $1 for the next 48 hours, from there it will go back up to the normal price of $30.

Are you asking about baits for freshwater or saltwater fishing ?

It would also help, if you would state where you would be fishing

Niel: In 70 years of fishing, I've learned that if you can put it on a hook and heave it in the water, eventually a fish will bite it.
