More information, please. Is this a feral cat outside or your own cat inside? Is there hissing and growling going on? Is the tail all puffed up or whipping back and forth? Most of the time you have to do something for a cat to attack you. I said MOST of the time because sometimes a cat is so threatened it has no other option. If this is a feral cat outside, just back away and don't stare at the cat. Staring is a form of aggression.
Momma cats will protect their kittens and can be very fierce, too, so watch your step.
Cat's don't attack the same way dogs do, because cats also have those sharp claws. Cats are smaller so usually aren't as aggressive as dogs, but they can still try to defend themselves. They might hiss and swipe at you first, so if that happens -- just back away. Many times cats just want to be left alone and don't enjoy being grabbed when they've got other things on their mind. I use heavy welding gloves with gauntlets when handling an angry cat. Sometimes throwing a blanket over the cat will temporarily confuse it enough so it can be caught and removed without harm to either party.

If I was a decent human I would just leave it alone, but seeing as im not I say that I would probably scratch the lower part of its back so it goes crazy and runs around in circles for ages. Who said cats arent entertainment

You could leave it alone and back off or show it that you are boss and hiss from a safe distance while 'rooooowwwwwwwwwing' at it like a cat being strangled to show it that you aren't afraid of it and dominate it - sort of like a Cesar dog whisperer move!!

it depends on where it is?
if the stranger cat entered your house you have to leave the door open and leave the room to let her go away. if this stare chocked you and you have bad imagination, feed cats around your home. if its in the street just leave it .

Cats dont like it when you eyeball them, so if you want to appease a cranky cat, look slightly past them, and squint your eyes. They do the same thing to each other all the time.

Leave or fight. Be the human. Be the alpha and show the cat who is in charge.

If I was at home, I'd leave. If I was at work I'd grab it by the scruff and pop in in a crush cage.
