Did it start on such a large scale with Jews/Christians, or was it present before?

Chastity and homosexuality

2357 Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity,140 tradition has always declared that "homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered."141 They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved.

2358 The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God's will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord's Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition.

2359 Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection.

Homosexuals long ago were considered shamans and such. The origins of homophobia were the religions of the mideast, who put "evil" in a lot of natural things, even females.

Attributing irrational fear to those who oppose homosexuality is another way of saying that you shouldn't judge, although without judgment there would be nothing to make a decision on, but, the words that Jesus said are used against him anyway.

The word is used to intimidate and suppress anyone who might take a stand for what is right using righteous judgment.

There is no such thing as "homophobia". You are insulting religions with baseless opinion presented as fact.

Nonsense. I merely agree on one element - "opposite" sexism, etc., is BS. there is not any "opposite" approximately it - discriminating against somebody because of the fact of which "team" they belong to is misguided. that's the two racist (or sexist, etc.) to make huge assumptions approximately whites, blacks, women human beings, adult males, gays, straights, etc. Why do human beings see issues in such black and white words? merely on account which you're a member of an oppressed team, it would not supply you carte blanche to do some oppressing your self. merely by having dignity and showing classification will we strengthen a ineffective ringer for women human beings, as an occasion, or blacks, or gays, or notwithstanding. which potential not being rather sexist or racist and then whining which you're oppressed your self, so it would not "count extensive style".

I forget the name, but Rome had this emperor that decided to make Rome more moral, so he cracked down on promiscuity. This happened independently of the religions of the day. Rome being the superpower at the time, that probably is what ultimately tipped the scales.

to answer your question I'm going to go with christians.
most of you stated that a phobia is a fear but you don't fear gay people.
BUT what you hate you fear. even though you say you don't hate them, telling them they are an abomination or sinful is a form of
hate.
do you think it's right to teach people that other are an abomination?
an abomination is a pedophile or a rapist or a slave trader. but your big problem is with homosexuality?
christians, you need to get your priorites straight, no pun inteneded, stop hating people for silly reasons and help the rest of us do something about what's really an abomination in this world.

Homophobia is a made up word, made up by the Gay community to victimize themselves.

A phobia is a fear. Few people fear homosexuals, many simply call homosexuality what it is, a sin. Quite simple really.

Btw, I agree with the statement I just made, but if a homosexual lived next door to me, I could careless and would treat him/her like any other person living next door to me..

human nature... it came long before any religion because it goes against the purpose of life ( perpetuation of the species).. not to say homosexuality is wrong or right, just that human nature pushes the general population to fear it as survival instinct just like other phobias of height, darkness, large animals with big teeth, death, etc.
