I use the updated version of the player but I still get those freezes. How to remedy that probem?

As Don M said, it could be the file that is at fault.

Your problem is not with the VLC player it is from the source media, or the software used to make it or human error.
Have a look at the link provided and scroll down and it may answer your question in the format the (.mkv) that the source media was made with. It isn't what is normally used.

Did you get this problem before? may be it's you problem with WMP 11 that you have just install. try open old video you used to, if this problem still, it's your WMP 11's error. Else, it's that video's problem, don'e worry about it!
