Weather, road conditions, and even drinking are contributing factors, but not the cause.

The most common cause is dirver error, specifically Inattentive Driving.

The ones where somebody's vehicle collides with something else.

Conversely, the least common car accidents are the ones where some non-vehicle material collides into an unmoving vehicle, like a falling tree limb, or water; or when someone fails to discharge the static electricitiy on their persons before touching a fuel pump nozzle to the vehicle.

Had you asked what is the most common CAUSE of accidents, then I might have agreed with some of the above contributors.

Backing!
At, or about, 70 %.
Last time I checked, 70% of all car accidents involved some type of backing.
A lot of larger companies today require their employees, that drive company vehicles, to back into parking spaces when arriving at a job site.
Statistics show that everyone is more aware of their driving at this time and greatly decreases the chance of an accident when leaving.

But the most accidents are caused by improper backing.
The majority of fatalities are still caused by drunk drivers.

Typical scenario. Vehicle B follows vehicle A too closely. Vehicle A has to stop suddenly because an animal or pedestrian suddenly appears in the road ahead. The driver of vehicle B does not have time to react and slams into the rear of vehicle A. This type of rear-end collision is entirely avoidable and entirely due to stupidity. The driver of vehicle B is at fault and always liable under the law.

Large car parks are the scene of a large number of minor accidents, fortunately with fewer human casualties than hiway collisions. People abandon their usual caution and do not abide by lane markings, often cutting diagonally across, rather than follow arrowed directions. Also, incompetent reversing in car parks causes a high percentage of body damages.

Roundabouts. The second driver sees the road is clear and goes for it....assuming the car in front will do the same. Often it was older drivers being over cautious yet the one that went into the rear end was prosecuted.

I tabulate every crash that occurs at my department - improper backing accounts for over 60% of violations in traffic crashes. Tailgating (whatever you use to address a rear end collision) is next, followed by yielding violations. everything else falls in closely.
