Are you talking about pets, or about wild birds?
If you want to attract wild birds to your yard, make a variety of food available. Set up a feeder with a wild birdseed blend. Set up another one with sunflower seeds. Hang a tube feeder for the finches, and fill it with niger seed (thistle). Hang a suet feeder for woodpeckers. In the warmer months, provide a nectar feeder for hummingbirds and a jelly feeder for the Orioles (they prefer grape). Some birds eat fruit, so hang orange, pear and apple halves on a tree, and place grapes and raisins on the ground. And, if you want insect eaters, you can offer mealworms at a feeding station.
No matter what birds you wnat, no matter what foods you provide, don't forget to provide a source of clean, fresh water for all of them.
If you are talking about pet (caged) birds, you need to provide a variety of foods for them to be healthy.

Neither of those are proper foods for birds.
Lettuce is not proper food for any one.
My African Grey loves cooked sweet corn, bananas, oranges, hot red peppers (don't kiss her after that one!!), papaya, carrots, all kinds of foods.
My parakeet is more of a traditional seed eater, prefers millet.
The outside birds love suet (fat from cooked meat), peanut butter, some birds also eat bugs, worms (look at the spring time robins).
Birds eat many different things!!

No lettuce,it has no nutritional value, and can contain pesticides. They can eat any veggie besides avocado, any grains, bread ,rice, cereals;any fruit but try to stay clear of tropical things like pineapple;hard-boiled eggs in the shell cut in half;and small bits of fish or chicken once a week.No salt, sugar, caffeine. Also can be fed sprouted seed.

My birds loved fresh leaf spinach and it has lots of vitamins so it's good for them. Some of my birds ate fruit (usually apples).

Well I don't know about birds, but pigeons (rats with wings) will eat anything. Little bastages ate my dog's food all the time. They were even brave enough to dip the food in the water to make it soft, right under her nose.
