What made the six-pointed star the Jewish symbol? What's the story behind it? How long has it been the Jewish symbol?

I'm not Jewish. I read the Wikipedia article in the link above.

This is not mentioned in the article, but I was taught that the Star of David represents the universal truth "as above, so below". The two triangles, one pointing up wards "above" and one pointing down "below", are superimposed on each other, equating them.
As above, so below, means that as things are done above, so should they be done below. We should try to create the glory and holiness of God in everything we do, to create a heaven on earth, so that what is above will be manifested below.
