Well, there have been instances where people have died from a broken heart. Personally I don't think it can happen though. Something as a result of depression or sadness might cause death, but not the feeling itself.

yes i do think you can die from sadness i personally feel like dying right now !!! every thing is so dark and so hard. i find that it's very hard to survive and i feel stuck yet i want out of this state but i really can't and i'm not suicidal or anything ( coz basically i do not want to go to hell after i die since i am already living in one ) so maybe it's possible to die from sadness coz u kinda give up and actually hope u die and not mind terribly to just slip into an eternal sleep -_- sorry if i sound too depressing but i just feel like sharing ! sorry .

We are all dying every moment of our lives as we cope with the tragedy of life. How we eventually will succumb is left to unforeseen happenstance, or choices we make, possibly over periods of time. Depression and sadness are conditions related to stress, which puts a strain on the heart and circulatory system. It also affects the brain and glands and nerves throughout the body. Just as chaotic as to have constant adrenaline, it is also detrimental to have constant negativity. It is perhaps why a spouse dies soon after another after years together. Or why some animals kept as pets for years are said to die of broken hearts after their owners die. I cannot cite any reference materials offhand, but I do know that mental health websites should have some articles on depression. Agony over traumatic events can probably cause a stroke, or brain hemmorhage. Post traumatic stress disorder is probably the best example of this condition-it used to be called shell shock due to the intense scars left by war, which is probably the most critical life and death situation humans can face. I'm sure there were many who died without being able to speak of the horrors they witnessed. In short, if you or anyone you know is depressed, please help them by being a glass half full kind of friend. We all have to go at our own time, but if we look at life as a gift, and a chance to make whatever made us proud of us, than our steps will be guarded, and we can live and die knowing billions before us and after us mark the same trail. We are not alone.

Depression, sadness, and other down in the mouth disorders, just make it easier to be killed. Your not alert to danger, and sometimes when it's real bad, you don't care if you get killed. Just a little shy of suicide, so when this happens, take some time off, get someplace safer, and then go through your depths, and out the other side, takes a little time, and some changing of how you do business with the people, emotionally rung out all the time, just ain't no fun.

Yes, I think some people do. When you're depressed, your immune system let down on their guards and hence you become susceptible to attacks. Even the smallest illness can kill you. This is what is called 'mental euthanasia'. Once you lose the will to live because you lose someone dearest to you, you will believe that your time is coming up too for you and you'll begin to neglect your own needs and die.

Depression can lead to death. You raise great questions, when you let yourself go untreated, you let yourself rot, and you die inside before dying on the outside, by your own hand or someone elses. Think about Langston Hughes' poem:
"Hold Fast to Dreams, For if Dreams die,
Life is a broken winged bird that cannot fly
Hold Fast to Dreams, for if dreams go,
life is a barren field, covered in snow."
