"MythBusters" just covered this the other night.
While no one has ever had to before, they proved that an experienced air traffic controller COULD talk a novice into landing a commercial aircraft safely.
Both Jamie & Adam tried a full motion simulator before hand, and both crashed and burned on landing. Then, both tried again with a traffice controller talking them through the landing, and both landed successfully.

the question was about a commercial flight. Although, I have heard of other pilots in the back being asked to help out when a first officer got sick a few years ago. The captain was fine, but he was from another country and wanted some help on the radios. Also, about the mythbusters episode, they said an air traffic controller would talk someone down. Then, they used a simulator instructor that was a very experienced pilot, not an air traffic controller. I wondered why they made such a silly mistake. I'm sure a controller could help you, as many are pilots, but few have type ratings or time in commercial aircraft. I'm sure they would try to find a pilot who flies or instructs in that type to help the person land the thing.

Sometimes, pilots that are passengers on a flight have gone up to the flight deck to help the pilots, like in United Airlines Flight 232. I do not know of any passengers bringing the plane down that have had no pilot training though, I think that would be almost impossible.

ATC can talk to them all they wan't, but there is so much skill required in landing the plane that you can only get through years of training.

It happened once on February 8, 2002 at Cape Cod. A Student Pilot took control of a Cessna 402 Twin Engine Commuter Flight. She either forgot to put the landing gear down or didn't know how to get it down, so she landed it with the gear up. Everyone walked away.

I would say yes to the question.

No nobody has ever had to do it before. Mythbusters tested it and while researching they discovered that. They also tested that it is possible to land a commercial flight just by ATC's instructions. Go to Discovery.com and search full length episodes.

No, because no one ever HAS to do anything.

If someone has done it before, then I think the answer is YES. But not because he HAD to, because he WANTED to.
