One time I was going to go help my mom in her church's nursery on Sunday and she refused to let me go with her until I put a bra on. She said it was bad for me to go to church without one. I know that Christian women are supposed to cover their heads in church (even though most do not), but no one said there was going to be an underwear inspection!

But, WHY do I need to wear one? I personally think I look better without a bra.

Why is it gross to go without a bra? Do you people have such serious body image issues that you think you must hide your breasts behind tons of cloth just to look "decent"?

Paddy,
Here's the verse you seem to be unaware of. By the way, it is in the New Testament, just in care you weren't aware of that either.
1 Corinthians 11:5-7
5 And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is just as though her head were shaved. 6 If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off; and if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head. 7 A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man.

Martin S,
You don't really think I buy that do you? I am a woman in my 30's not some little teenybopper who is actually going to believe that a woman can MAKE a man sin sexually by looking tempting. If a guy can't control himself sexually just because he can see the shape of a woman's body, then he's not much of a man as far as I'm concerned! Do you really see your gender as being THAT weak?

This is one of many reasons I am no longer a Christian.
The true religion as taught by Jesus has become inextricably entangled with nonsense such as this.
Your body is perfectly beautiful just the way God made it. If looking at you without a bra incites lust in a man, that's HIS sin, and HIS fault. It's like the lechers blaming Susannah for "tempting" them by being beautiful.
Otherwise, it is merely custom and convention that makes people think wearing a bra (or a head covering, or long sleeves, etc) is necessary in church. You do not have to accept this custom. Your mother clearly does.
Sooner or later you will have to make your own decisions about what you believe, and find your own relationship with God.

When I was a catholic, the parish priest checked carefully that all women wore a hat. One day, the richest lady of the village came to church with only a lace veil on her hair. No more checks after that.
Modest. Why can't a woman go without a bra and not be modest? God gave her breasts, no? It are the men who are not modest! They try to make everybody believe that if women are not modest, they are so virile they won't be able to control themselves. The women have to behave in a modest way because of the machos.
Solution: let men go naked in the churches, that is how god made them. It will be a big disappointment, a lot of fun for a few weeks and then nothing.
There were no bras in JC's time.

The Methodist church where my husband has been a member since birth and our daughter goes to Sun school (we're doing the duel religion thing, we'll see how it goes) is pretty easygoing and I can't imagine anyone having a problem with it, at least no one would say anything. The teen boys may be a little happier! I'm guessing that you have relatively small breasts, because I'm a DD and I practically sleep with a bra on for comfort reasons. Do what makes you happy, and try to remember that the Christians were the ones would made sex a sin and the body "dirty", if they have a problem with it, that's what they signed on for.

Many Christians feel that women are very sinful and must be corrected at all costs. That apparently includes what women wear, and why women wear... Even though all the "to-do" about women's wear is really about men, even the "christian" ones, who can't seem to stop lusting, even IN church...respect your mom and wear a bra.

If you think that you looked "church ready" without a bra, I'm going to assume you are right. Some women do not need to wear them, they look perfectly decent without them. So, to answer your question I don't think it's a sin to go without a bra. BUT you should listen to your Mom, unless it is fun to tick her off. LOL

The bra as it is now, didn't even exist until 1904. There really isn't any point. Your mom is just being prudish. I mean does the bible say anything about it? Of course not. So why care?

Okay. here's something weird. But why is it when christian woman are supposed to cover their head(hair specifically), no one says anything but when a muslim woman is supposed to then basically the crowd goes wild. i think both are equally women oppressing. except that muslims are much more stricter i think.Usually.

Women are supposed to dress modestly so that they don't tempt men to think lustful thoughts when they see them. That doesn't mean that women have to come to church wearing a burlap bag or anything. It just means that because they don't want to tempt a man to sin they don't wear clothes to church that are designed to get men to look at them and automatically feel sexually attracted to them.
Maybe your mom thought that not wearing a bra with whatever top you had on would get men to think thoughts like that.
