Describe three differences between geodatic surveying and plane survaying?

1. the primary difference is plane survey assumes the earth to be flat, geodetic survey used a 3 dimensional model to take into account the earth curvature.
2. In plane survey, simple geometry applies, ie interior angles for a triangle add up to 180 degrees, which is not true for curved shapes.
3. In geodetic survey the use of GPS type lattitude and longitude is common reference system, plane surveys use simple cartesian coordinates.
4. Elevations in geodetic survey must be sealevel referenced. Elevations used in plane survey can be reference to an arbitrary benchmark.
5. Geodetic survey are subject to correction when the datum for the earth model is refined. ie 1927 datum vs 1983 datum.
6. Plane survey is useful only for small distances (1 mile), Geodetic survey is required for closure over large distance (100 miles).
