"Pone" or "Corn Pone" is an old fashioned word for Southern style corn bread. Grits are ground corn kernels that have been dried, then soaked in lye to release the skins. (That dried corn soaked in lye, then rinsed is called hominy.) They make a porridge something like farina and are very nutritious. Matter of fact, if you have ever had polenta you have eaten grits - the yellow version. Most grits in the US are made from white corn rather than yellow.

You have been given the right answers, but I find it amusing that so many people think of "grits" as something you can only find in the Southern States of America, when you can actually find it everywhere!! It's just the south appreciated grits before they were ever so "main stream".

The more refined "polenta" or "hominy" can be found on many a fancy restaurant menu, all over the world.

By the way, northerners eat theirs like an oatmeal or cream of wheat, they sweeten it with sugar and cinnamon. Yuck! Give me eggs over easy, lots of butter, salt and pepper please!!
It was nicknamed "grit" from an old English term "grytta" which means course meal (corn meal). Grits also have a "gritty" texture if NOT cooked properly.

What is grits? Grits is good with butter and sugar.
What is pone? Corn pone... is not as good as hushpuppies.
What are hushpuppies? Little pieces of fried corn bread, shaped a little like cat turds, but oh so yummy.

Grits is like corn grinded up that are dehydrated then you put water in them...this makes them soft and people eat them at breakfast with cheese, onions, oregano, garlic I put sazon on mine.... (IN THE SOUTH US) or plain salt and pepper...In ATL they have this one dish at Gladys Knights Chicken and waffle called Fish and Grits...its really good!!! I thought I would hate it give it a chance.
