The day that he ships (goes to boot camp) is the day that he goes active. Not a day earlier. He's not an E-1 right now if he is in DEP. When he goes to boot camp and starts getting a paycheck, then he'll be an E-1.

He is probably confused because the time he spends in DEP counts toward his inactive reserve time that he will have to complete if he does not stay active for more than 8 years.

This is VERY dated. I was on kind of a DEP (I say "kind of" because I don't know if they called it Delayed Entry Program back then) the summer after I graduated from college in 1960. My status was "Inactive Reserves." That meant I had to have been at least an E-1. A civilian would hardly been considered part of the Reserves... even Inactive Reserves. Actually, because of my degree, I entered boot camp as an E-3, but that's beside the point.

I'm not sure if that's changed. But, until he's in uniforn, he's absolutely not "Active Duty."

So, E-1... maybe. Active Duty... no way.

He is NOTHING but a civilian just like you.

E-1 is Seaman Recruit in the Navy and he would become that officially after graduating from boot camp.

Your little friend is a big story teller who is just trying to get attention, not uncommon from young people.

Active duty also does not occur until the day he ships for boot camp.

that's amazingly probable that a man or woman retained the rank of BM3 for 10 years given the term 1952 to 1959. even although, on account that their are 2 listings in the carrier checklist of him having attained the rank of BM3. What this in fact potential is he replaced into demoted and it took awhile to reacquire that previous rank. back in the previous days merely before 1964 rank promotions weren't constantly that widely used enormously in peace time. I served 34 years in the army and retired. I sat in rank E-7 for 12 years until eventually now i replaced into promoted to Senior chief E-8 replaced into an E-8 for 3yrs then made E-9 grasp chief for 5 years. i concept i could finally end up a E-7 and replaced into approximately to place up papers for retirement as quickly as I made E-8. As i bear in mind back in the early days 50's-70's their have been age standards for specific ranks besides. desire this enables.

is he a reservist? and did he sign the paperwork?
then maybee, but that is only for drill status, he is still not official until after bootcamp.
he will be an E-1 upon graduation from bootcamp. he doesnt get paid until he starts boot camp.
he is not official until boot.
tell him to calm down, I know he is excited about joining. I was really excited when I signed up. (I was also in DEP for 6 months).
tell him good luck in bootcamp and in his great new career. he will learn alot, and hopefully have alot of fun. tell him to be nice to the corpsman. :)

he is NOT Active until he graduates Boot Camp UNLESS he is going in to the Reserves. Reservists are considered to be 'in' immediately, even if they haven't shipped out to Boot/A school yet.

E1 is the lowest paygrade.

your friend isn't active until he is sworn in so he is full of sh*t. he will be a e1 once worn in unless he has something that they will automatically give him e2 or e3 upon graduation from basic.
