If I just want to get a tattoo artist to draw me up a custom tattoo, for me to look at for a few months before finally getting inked, how much would I expect to pay? (Just custom, not actual tattoo)

I have three tattoos and they were all drawn specifically for my by the artist. As long as it isn't anything huge, they probably won't charge extra for drawing up a design--they're artists, it's what they do. One of my tattoos cost only $30 (but it's the smallest one and it was done by a friend of mine, not at a shop), and the other two were each $90. Just make sure you tip your artist.

Do you have the design? Some artists charge a little extra if you want their help to create the design, but if you have it ready and printed/drawn out then you're set to go - most artists charge by the hour but all their rates differ, mine charges £60 an hour (in theory anyway - he usually knocks it down a bit) which would usually be about $120 I think? But as I say it totally depends on the artist, that's about average I'd say. And 2x2 (do you mean inches or cm?) would take no longer than half an hour I expect, which'd make it about £30 in my studio, but some artists have a minimum amount so you may have to pay a minimum £40 charge even if the design only took a few minutes to ink. Anyway, that's the average sort of price you'd be looking at, a tattoo that size won't break the bank so if I were you I'd take it into the artist of your choice (choose wisely!) and go from there! Good luck! Edit: Just a tip, if you meant 2x2cm then you might need to either enlarge it or simplify it slightly, as the edges are quite intricate, and even if the artist will do it, they'll without a doubt go pretty blurry over the years and lose that nice effect. If you were talking inches then you'll prob be fine xx

How much does a blue shirt cost? A small green one? Same idea here- No one is going to be able to tell you. Tattoo artists charge based on different criteria parlor to parlor. Some charge based on time spent tattooing, some based on the difficulty of the design, some on color, size, and so on. Many have a shop minimum as well. It's going to vary between every artist you speak to. Best thing you can do is take a copy of the concept to the artist you plan on doing the tattoo and asking him or her for an estimate. Also keep in mind- "Good tattoos are not cheap, and cheap tattoos are not good"

If you want an artist to draw something for you, give it to you and let you out of the shop with it when you haven't made a deposit or any sort of garauntee that you will be returning to him and no one else to get the tattoo, I would expect the price to be rather high. Artists don't want to spend all of the time creating a piece and then have you run off to a cheaper artist to have it put on.

The artists I know would probably charge you 50 dollars an hour for whatever time it took them to make the finished piece on paper. It's pricey to discourage you from stealing the work away as above.

HOWEVER If you are really going to get this tattooed, speak to your artist and explain that you want to think about it for a couple of months. Tell them you have real commitment issues and want to make absolutely sure it is perfect for you. They will ask you for some kind of deposit and the artwork will not be leaving the shop. But you'll be able to come in and check it out every couple of weeks.

If you take this route your artist will know his work isn't sneaking off to another shop and you will have the option of re-working the piece if you need to. Be sure you are honest about how long they will be waiting to put this work on you so the shop doesn't get discouraged on working with you. As long as the shop doesnt mind the wait, this idea will probably work out much better (and less expensively) than trying to buy just the artwork.

what do you mean just custom not actual tattoo? just to have someone draw something for you? i go to a custom tattoo artist and the price is all inclusive. he draws all of the tattoos that he does and the cost of his time in drawing the tattoo is included in the price of getting tattooed. for new customers he requires a $50 deposit so i guess that covers the cost of his time if a customer bails on him.

sorry, misread. the drawings can range anywhere from 20-100 dollars or more, but they will discount that from your tattoo price

you must really ne new, huh? lol
it all depends on who draws it, what size it is, and some places charge more, depending on where you want it, i have 3 custom tatoos, the one on my back was 290, and its very large, but I recieved a decent military discount. The two on my shoulders are about 190. if you go to a place, like the ones you see on TV you can expect to pay a crazy ammount. just ask around. and remember, cheaper is not always better. you usually get what you pay for, and it will take a good coverup artist to make it look good
