I am looking to buy a good rifle when I turn 18 so I can get some practice in before I join the marines after high school is over. I want something I can use on the range or maybe even hunting or at least protection while I'm campin out in the forest. all I have now is a survival knife. any thoughts? I prefer a carbine but a bolt action would work too I suppose.

If you are already a hunter and shooter, you are in pretty good condition.

I suggest you join a shooting club, the NRA, and your State Rifle & Pistol Association. Get your Dad to do the same and then pester him into purchasing an M-1 Garand through the Civilian Marksmanship Program.

Use it to compete in CMP matches at your rifle club. You will learn to shoot out to 500 or 600 meters. That is what sets the Marine rifleman appart, MARKSMANSHIP.

If you are not already and experienced shooter, the same advise holds, with one big change. Before you start with the M-1 Garand, get a good quality .22 LR rifle, preferably a bolt-action or lever-action, and learn the basics of gunhandling, sight picture, and trigger control. Shoot up a few thousand rounds in practice before you move on to the Garand.

Good Luck, and Merry Christmas!

>>Something I can use on the range or maybe even hunting<< You will not go wrong with the Ruger 10/22

>>Protection while I'm campin out in the forest<< "Protection" from what? If you need a rifle to protect you from large predators you're going to need a lot more than a .22 LR

I would highly recommend you buy yourself a Ruger Model 10-22 .22LR caliber Semi-Automatic Rifle. It comes in 18" and 20" barrels (Carbine Length) has a 10 Shot Rotary Magazine, and Adjustable Sights. Comes already drilled and tapped if you decide to mount a scope on it later. You can get one for around $179.00, even cheaper sometimes when they are on sale. These are one of the most popular rifles being manufactured today. I sell these about 8-1 over other brands in my Gun Shops......This is a "perfect" first rifle to learn on. 22 LR ammunition is very inexpensive and this rifle is very easy to master and shoot well. It's also a perfect rifle for hunting small game and a good carbine for camping trips. This rifle has everything you are looking for and more.Check them out at www.ruger-firearms.com.Good Luck and Merry Christmas!

to be honest, Id suggest you think about a shotgun instead. In my opinion its much more versatile, lots more power if/when you need it out in the woods. Tell me, if you met a hungry or horny bear in the forest, do you think a .22 is gonna drop him ? your finger will be tired by the time you finish tryin...
Id suggest a good ole Remmington 870 12 Gauge Shotgun... and like Robert said above me about the Ruger .22 rifle, you can plan on having the Remmington for a lifetime as well.
(for multipurpose like survival/safety as well as target or hunting, go with a shorter to medium length barrel, too long can be a hastle in the woods or in the event of a breakin...
Good luck in the USMC too man

I have one of these:

It has continuously made me a better shot.
It has been my experience, dollar for dollar, nothing beats an air rifle for accuracy. A $300 air rifle will beat the pants off a $300 .22 in terms of grouping at 50' or less.

Learn to shoot. Once you learn how to shoot, learning a particular rifle is easy. If you can't shoot, it doesn't matter what rifle you use.

a .22 rifle is the best way to go for a beginer. I highly recomend it. No real kick, and is great for target pratice and small game.
