Most digital camera you can get have some sort of video mode. Depending on the camera you bought will also determine the quality of your video. You can change the resolution the video is taken at on most cameras, but even on the highest resolution, your video quality is very poor compared to a camcorder. The same things apply to camcorders that do still shots. They do great video, but unless you spend 400 or more on a high end hard drive camcorder, your still shot modes are restricted to 1-3 mega-pixels, only allowing you to make decent pictures up to 5x7's. anything larger may or may not come out distorted.
I recommend that you take a look at a decent Kodak or cannon camera for about 100 to 150 dollars, then pick up a mini dv camcorder for about the same price. You will be happier in the end than paying for a higher model camera.

For $180 [samys.com], I would highly recommend the following digital camera which has received over 400 5-star reviews by purchasers at amazon.com. It has the following features:
1. A 3X optical zoom;
2. A 2.5 inch 238,000 pixel LCD [higher than the Sony DSC-W55!]
3. Comes with a rechargeable lithium battery and a separate charging unit that produces around 180 shots per 90 minute charge;
4. A "vivid" color setting found as a default on Nikon D40s and D80s;
5. A view finder that works in bright outdoor light;
6. Excellent quality sound videos that records piano playing;
7. Uses standard inexpensive SD memory cards;
8. Has an ASA rating of up to 1000 so it's focusable in very dim light, like at clubs and concerts;
9. It's an ultra-compact that fits into your shirt pocket;
It's the Canon Powershot SD1000 ELPH.
Good luck!

Which Brand And Model? Most Name Brands Over $100.00 Have A Pretty Good Video Mode as Well As Stills. But, For Video You Will Need A LOT Of Memory.

There are two cheap HD camcorders with good still pictures quality for $170-250. Looking to the Aiptek GO-HD or A-HD it is a little hard to compare these small HD camcorders with some excellent gadgets such as Canon NV20, Panasonic SD1 or Sony CR7. However, even in comparison with Sanyo Xacti family as HD1 and HD2, the Aiptek GO-HD performs good movie quality, especially in low light situations. Though Sanyo HD1 or HD2 and Aiptek GO-HD and A-HA are similar gadgets, it is wrong to call it as a ‘knock-off’ of Sanyo HD camcorders. In my opinion these two can be not bad for your girlfriend.
