How many of those tribes are now there in Israel?

Two tribes existed after the dispersion by the Assyrians in 721 BC, the tribe of Judah and the tribe of Levy. In current Judiasm, there are those who trace (or claim to trace) their ancestry back to the Levites, and particularly, those who were descended from Aaron. Strangely, while Moses had children, they seem to have fallen by the wayside somewhere in the Torah. The descendants of Aaron are considered "Cohain" or priests, and there is talk that there is a "Priestly" gene which could be traceable back to Aaron. Unfortunately, World Wars I and II messed up much of the underlaying paperwork that could have supported these claims. The "rank and file" belong to Judah (at least those who are Jewish by parentage and not by conversion).

Jewish Tribes Today

Judah would be only tribe that you could be sure that survives today because it was their kingdom that survived in the past and gave the name to the land. Benjamin was a tribe so small it almost got lost. i don't know if it was lost but I think it was part of the southern kingdom. The other ten tribes were in the northern kingdom which got conquered. The Samaritans are their descendants who have almost died out due to inbreeding.
The Romans destroyed all the records in the first century so nobody can prove anything today.
It is however a good basis for the Da Vinci code LOL

Edit cattbarf beat me to it well done cat I stand corrected.

Yes. They are spread out but many are returning to Israel. All of the tribes still exist.

People from the tribes probably exist but they don't exist as tribes. They were Israeli tribes. There was only one Jewish tribe.

People are alive today who have descended from all twelve tribes. However the records of who is descended from who has been lost so no one knows which tribe they are descended from. So, as far as the known tribes are concerned, they are "lost."

Some very religious jews from very religious families can trace their ancestors back to a rabbi who had claimed to be a direct descendant of King David. To my knowledge, no jew has a definitive record that goes back to biblical days. However genetic testing can suggest connections to ancient Hebrew populations sometimes.

To my understanding the Jews have lost their linage and are now just Jews. God has taken away from them, their Kingdom as well. God does what pleases Him. God's will indeed.

However, it does not mean any negative thinking.

No. they have all been lost. Odds are they never existed in the first place, but are instead astrotheological allegory.
