After somewhere between 15 and 18 months the child is really starting to be aware of 'repeat environments', which will inevitably include her or his bedroom. An area where the young child (at age 1 we can even say 'baby') feels safe enough and comfortable enough to fall asleep in just a few times is normally plenty to make that place their preferred sleeping area.
And then there's an important thing to do with 'Daddy and Mummy privacy' and what needs to happen there... ;-)

I have 4 boys. They are all under 12, the youngest being 5. They all went in their own rooms at 6 months old.

We practice AP with our son who will be three in January.
Just after he was one I began putting him to bed in his own room. He would wake & I would nurse him then he would go back to sleep. I quickly cut out that middle of the night nursing and he slept pretty well but anywhere between 12 & 4am he gets up and comes and joins me in my bed. He's still doing this!!
I will attach a couple of links that have some interesting thoughts on the subject.

It depends we have five children, the twins always had their own room, but the baby now is 9 months old, she sleeps in her bed in our room. I think around two is a good age, but it depends on your family size, I feel safer with the baby being with me, being that I have older children in the house.

My husband and I are mostly AP parents. We moved my oldest to her own bed when she was 5 because I was pregnant and on bedrest, my youngest moved herself at 6.

My eldest moved into his own room after we decorated it for him when he was 5....my younger one was much later than that (in fact he slept with me last night because he got spooked, and he is 11!). I suppose the answer is when they are ready.

my son slept in his crib in our room til he was 1. No sooner than 4 months since after 4 months the risk of sids decreses greatly.
