I don't know what they use in Sweeny Todd but this is what I think of for Old English Meat Pie=
Mincemeat Pie

INGREDIENTS
3 1/4 pounds lean ground beef
12 cups apples - peeled, cored and diced
6 cups raisins
1 cup brandy
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon ground allspice
1 tablespoon ground nutmeg
3 1/2 cups white sugar

DIRECTIONS
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef thoroughly. Being sure not to over-brown it.
Place chopped apples and the cooked ground beef in a food processor and pulse until the mixture is made up of pea sized chunks.
In a non-reactive skillet combine the apple and ground beef mixture with the raisins, brandy, ground cinnamon, ground allspice, ground nutmeg and the white sugar. Simmer for 30 minutes.
Cool filling to lukewarm and pour into freezer bags (2 cups per bag). Freeze filling until needed. One baggie will fill one 8 inch double crust pie. Thaw filling before using

In Sweeney Todd, they use humans. Here's a more politically correct way:
Make a thick beef or lamb stew.
Build a pie shell.
Pour stew into shell, top with crust.
Bake.
Eat.
Enjoy! Wonderful with salad, bread, and beer!

FRENCH CANADIAN MEAT PIE

1 lb. minced pork (OR 1/3 lb. EACH ground veal, ground beef and ground pork)
1 small Onion
1 small Clove garlic, minced
1/2 tsp. Salt
1/2 tsp. Savory OR Sage
1/4 tsp. Celery salt
1/4 tsp. ground Cloves
1/2 c. Water
1/2 c. Breadcrumbs
Pastry for double crust pie

Place all of the ingredients (except the breadcrumbs and pie shell) in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Cook uncovered for 20 minutes over medium heat. Remove from heat and add a few spoonfuls of breadcrumbs. Let stand for 10 minutes. If the fat is sufficiently absorbed by the breadcrumbs, do not add more. If not continue in same manner. Cool the meat mixture and pour into a pastry-lined pan. Cover with the top crust, cut steam vents and bake in a 400 F. oven until golden brown. Serve hot with potatoes or rice and your favorite side dish. (Pie may be frozen for 4 to 5 months.)

HOMEMADE MEAT PIE

3 potatoes, peeled and cubed
4 carrots, sliced
1/4 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. black pepper
1 recipe pastry for a 9-inch double crust pie

Preheat oven to 350 F. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef and chopped onion until meat is no longer pink. Remove from heat and drain off excess fat. Stir in the vegetable beef and cream of mushroom soups, the potatoes and carrots. Season with salt and pepper. Divide filling between 2 - 9-inch pie plates. Roll pastry to fit the top of each pie. Cover each pie and cut slits in top to allow steam to escape. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes, or until golden brown. Let stand on a wire rack for 15 minutes before serving.
