Admission to the USA depends on your purpose. Canadians have a lot of visa waivers. (The mneumonic I learned was "pretend the visa is there.") There are a couple of exceptions, one is a fiance and another is a TN.

To be safe, phone the consulate and speak to someone in the NIV section. If Canadians don't need F-1 visas, ask for the citation in the law that says so. Then you'll need to contact the school in the USA and repeat that cite for them.

I'm guessing that the American school has a lot of experience with foreign students, each of whom has an F-1. The individual who told you that you need an F-1 may not have experience with Canadian students.

If it turns out you don't need an F-1 (and I'm leaning towards that direction), I think all you'll need is admission to the school- transcripts, financial status, etc.

Good luck and have a great Christmas!

you will require a study visa, so go back to the american consulate and request a F-1 or study visa. make sure you take the letter of acceptance from the school with you as proof.

Also you may need to take a bank statement as proof you can support yourself while you are there. Because you cannot be working.

Also you will need HEALTH insurance (and enough money to pay the premiums) as you will NOT be covered by Canadian provincial health care system.

Citizens of Canada are exempt the visa requirement except in the following classifications: E, K,& V. All other classifications, they are exempt the visa requirement. Of course, every other requirement must be met.

The school needs to be authorized to issue SEVIS Form I-20 in order to accept foreign students. If the school that accepted you can issue that form, ask them for one. You probably need to speak to the school's DSO, if they have one.

You are also exempt the passport requirement if you cross the land border. If you fly, you'll need a valid passport.

You will definitely need to show the inspector that you have sufficient funds to support yourself while in school without having to accept employment. You don't have to carry $30,000 with you, but you have to show that you have access to sufficient funds.

If your father is well-to-do, a letter from his employer or bank attesting to his financial status or salary will help. A cashiers check for your tuition and/or living expenses would help. Anything that shows that you have the funds.
