Yes this irritates me as much as people saying Happy Holidays. Jesus is the Reason for the season. Being PC has gotten out of control. Christmas is about JESUS!!!

I think that some people take it in a disrespectful way. People just say Xmas to shorten it. Many people may not know this but the term X in Greek symbolises Christ AKA. Jesus. It is true that it does take out the word Christ, but don't get annoyed it is a time to be happy...... so be happy.

Xmas is literally shorthand for Christmas, it's not some kind of antireligious slur. X in Greek was the symbol representing Christ. So Xmas and Christmas are basically the same thing, don't be offended! Merry Christmas/Xmas to you

I think they do it to be politically correct.
Christmas is not necessarily just celebrated by the Christians and religious folk, it's a melting pot of different religions and cultures crammed together into one holiday.
Although Christianity is the main religion behind Christmas, it is truly a mixed holiday.
This is mainly because of the preachers and monks who went out back in the day for the Catholic church trying to convert as many people as they could.
In order to do this, they generally just took the old Pagen traditions and called them Catholic. That way, the people were doing the same thing they were, but now they were "Catholic". So it's different in ever region.
This is what happened with Christmas. The "Yule Log" is an old Pagen tradition believe it or not. And the lighting of the tree was a German idea.
[starting to see?]
this is why most people on television and such choose to reffer to it as X-mas as apposed to Christmas.

Probably one of these days someone would come up with a new religion whose main contention is that Christmas should be spelled as Christmas.

No. Let's face it; in this World of wall-to-wall Text Messaging, Practically EVERYTHING is getting shortend or abreviated in some way or other... But if you want to see REAL "Disrespect for the Holiday Season", -just go to the Department Stores over the next 2 or 3 days, & THERE you'll see what the "meaning of Christmas" has REALLY come too... :(
