Probably a date, asking someone to a movie is a pretty cliche date scenario, particularly if he pays.
If you were just going shopping or mucking around, it would be just "hanging out".

In my opinion, it is self-assigned. If you both think that it is a date, then it is a date. If you both think that it is just hanging out, then it is just hanging out. If you both think opposite...then it is just hanging out, because while a date is a "kind" of hanging out, it's not the same the other way around.

It could be a date but he might just be a nice person like that. See if he asks you out again then it is probably a date. Are there signs that he likes you? If so then it's a date!

In between ... almost a date because he paid but otherwise sounds like hanging out ... but I don't really find the need to differentiate.

I would say a date...because if you share the fee that's just friends hanging out.

depends on what the guy thinks; I would consider that hanging out, but I think a lot of people would consider that a date.

You said hang out..then it is.
He pays and you asked? I think you should pay or at least offer to since you brought the whole thing up.
