All medications have adverse reactions and side effects. The memory issues with Topamax and the weight loss do occur in some patients, but both are easily reversed, and are quickly noticed and the patients are taken off the medication.
A medical nickname for Topamax used to be Dopamax, because it can make some people seem doped, and confused. It can cause significant memory issues, but does not affect long term memory.
I have taken Topamax, and had memory issues with the medication. I found that on a small dose of the medication, I could not remember things which happened 5 minutes before, but it was easily recognized, and I was able to stop the medication and the effects were reversed.
However, for the most part, most patients have no problem with the medication, and it is very effective for their medical issues. Generally, it is assumed that the physician who has gone to medical school, residency and specialized and educated to prescribe that medication, has the better judgement of whether your children need an AED medication. You have the availability of package inserts, and internet, but do not have the background to make the judgement. Those of us online, can tell you the affects of the medication on ourselves and our patients, but cannot diagnose or treat your children.
If you have concerns, talk to the physician. Do not immediately ask for a second opinion. First, because in the matter of a medication, it is not warranted and your insurance wont pay for it. Secondly, because, while you wait for a month or longer to see another specialist, your children remain untreated.
Contact the physician. Voice your concerns, Allow them to explain the risks and benefits of the medications to you. (though this probably should have been done when the prescription was first written). For most of the uses of Topamax, your children are being harmed more by being untreated, than by the potential side effects of the medication.

I would ask his reasons first, he knows more then you do.
I've been on Topamx for years for migraine headaches, they work wonders. All drugs carry some dangers, that's why they're marked. It's a matter of using them properly. If you think your children will misuse the drugs then it's best you took them away.
I wouldn't be without Topamax with a migraine.

use your best judgement. Do you feel they actually need the medication, that means did they ever have a seizure. If they did, do you think a little memory loss overrides getting a concussion, after landing on the ground, and twitching terribly? Not trying to insult those are the actual questions
