By plane and air are two names for the same thing. Download SIDESTEP from sidestep.com to get airfares arranged by price level.

About $140 USD r/t according to http://www.skyscanner.net and choosing low-demand travel times such as midweek Jan. and Feb.

Sidestep is not a download. You can check it, and over 40 other meta-searches, consolidators, and airlines direct, with just 1 input of cities and dates at http://www.bookingbuddy.com -- a huge time-saver and a very thorough search. However, Skyscanner (my first link for you) will also search low-cost airlines that do not allow bookings via other sources.

Without knowing your travel dates, you will have to contact Dutch Rail http://www.ns.nl for exact pricing. Sometimes there are offers, but I would expect Ams-Rom at least €129 each way.

europe is pretty cheap to travel around by plane, there are a hell of a lot of budget airlines. just book in advance to get a even better deal!

but i think if you have the time, and really want to enjoy the trip i would go by train.
