I have realised in the past few years after converting to aethiesm that I have copped alot of criticism. Such as on a forum I was looking at said "My definition of Aethiesm is Some know-it-all teenager who pretends to hate religion, but celebrates Christmas because s/he is a greedy hypocrite"

Not on! Howcome, religious people are allowed to criticise us, but when we criticise them, it's wrong!

My definition of Aethiesm is Some know-it-all teenager who pretends to hate religion, but celebrates Christmas because s/he is a greedy hypocrite" <-- That comment is pretty much calling us fakers, but then some full-on religious people believe that god made the world and then ALSO believed in the big bang-- One of them must be true.. You can't believe both! They reckon we're stupid for not believing and then they go and make a fool out of themselves by believing 2 things at once.

Please post your comments here.

How does one pretend to hate religion? Bahaha

I celebrate Christmas because it's a time for family and sharing. Funny how the christians could celebrate christmas with no gifts seeing as it's all about jesus... yet, I'm pretty sure they've got just as many materialistic items as any atheist.

And skunk its atheist not athiest.

How are you any better than any religious person who criticizes by sitting here saying something like,

"some full-on religious people believe that god made the world and then ALSO believed in the big bang-- One of them must be true.. You can't believe both! They reckon we're stupid for not believing and then they go and make a fool out of themselves by believing 2 things at once."

How is that not criticism? They have there their own belief system just as you have yours, or rather lack of one. If you can't understand what they believe why are you downing them for it?

Oh, and by the way, it works both ways -- religious people criticize atheists and atheists criticize thesists. Its not about WHO trashes WHO -- its about how you REACT to criticism. Do you let it tear you down and take it personally or do allow it to help to strenghten your beliefs by questioning what you believe and overcoming your doubts?

No matter what you believe there will ALWAYS be people who disagree.

The true celebration is the Winter Solstice, celebrated by the Romans, the builders of Stonehenge and many other cultures long before the birth of Jesus and the Christian corporation.

Celebrating and the exchange of gifts becoming a huge commercial endeavor is relatively new.

True Christians would not exchange gifts they would celebrate the birth of Christ. They would not need a Christmas tree (pagan symbol) to do this.

Don't let them get you down your decision is yours and is based on rational thinking.

When they question you or make comments ask if they are trying to convert you, and why?

Happy Solstice and a Happy New Year.

Aetheists and agnostics celebrating christmas is not being hypocritical!! It is the one area where christians are correct when they say most of us do not celebrate christmas as it was originally intended
I have always loved christmas, and do not spend a single moment thinking about Jesus unless I am somewhere where somebody else is discussing it. I do not feel like a hypocrite any more than I do on Haloween. It was originally a celebration of Satan and evil spirts, I always have a ball on Halloween too, and do not spend a single minute worshipping the devil.

Concerning the debate going on about intelligent design and evolution: is it possible that the final answer about which of these two seemingly opposite ideas is correct could simply be yes?

With one position firmly held by the believers and the other just as fearlessly defended by the non-believers, if you happen to be in a position somewhere near the middle, it does not look all that complex. From this position, you wonder why either-or has to be the answer.

If you believe that some higher being created the universe by intelligent design, what more elegant and intelligent design could there have been than a self-regulating system that continually checks its own errors and makes its own corrections in mid-stream as an integral part of the process.

This all seems quite logical to me although it probably won’t satisfy the believers because they are afraid to see any truth other than the one they have been told to believe in. Inversely it certainly won’t satisfy the non-believers because it leaves them stuck with a god that they are so obviously terrified of.

To sum up this view from the center, it might be most easily be explained by saying perhaps the designer was intelligent. Problem is, the designer was likely so intelligent that those seeking to prove that it is intelligently designed may be incapable of ever understand it well enough to see it for the elegant self regulating design that it has always been.

The nonbelievers will be similarly handicapped due to the internal terror the have about the idea that there may be a God. Neither side being able to leave their entrenched position for fear they may have to admit they were wrong. While the rest of us stand by trying to figure out what all the fuss is about. Personally I don’t think anyone is wrong, I just feel both sides are about half right.

Well, when people ask me, what's your religion, I say I'm Christian Orthodox, but I don't really go to church, I don't pray every night, I don't wear a cross, etc. But I was raised Christian Orthodox and I respect that religion. If I ever have to go to church with a Christian friend or something, I won't be like, Sorry, I'm atheist, I don't go to church. As a matter of fact, I would pray with him/her, I would light candles, etc. And I do celebrate Easter and Christmas cause it's fun.

You most certainly can believe in both God and the Big Bang (Roman Catholicism, hello??); that doesn't make it right, however. People only make fools of themselves by believing two /contradictory/ ideas at once; Orwellian Doublethink, so to speak.

Belief in God is not incompatible with the Big Bang. It was first proposed by Georges Lemaître, a Roman Catholic priest.

*cough* atheism *cough*

I find it funny that some xians are so miltant over what is basically a pagan holiday in which anything religious can easily be omitted. "But it's called CHRISTMAS" they cry yes and Easter is named after a pagan goddess. What's your point?!

Well you can believe god started the big bang.

You only just now realized there are hypocrites among atheists & some christians.

If there was an atheist day that gave away presents, im sure that Christians would not partake in it though.
