Thanks for great answers by t muthaiah, uppaluri ,diamonds and charan, infinity and many others.

I gnaana vaashistam there are hundreds of verses exclusively written by Sage Valmiki about this. Here the Valmiki writes that the effect of previous births are definitely there and simultaneously every man/woman has a free will to do what the person wants in this birth. The strength with which one makes that effeort determines the results.
If previous birth karma guides you to study well, and fortunately the circumstances in this birt are good ,and you are put in a good school, with your effort you can easily become a great scholar.Suppose you are not in god school and have bad friends , the effect of past birth gets additional support and becomes stronger.
So here a man has given full CHANCE to reduce the effect by being in good Company of friends (satsanaagatyam) and satgrandha pathanam and doing good things.
I keep the Q open for some input for mysake and for the benefit of all.Tanx

without going into philosophical details i would come to practical explanation.

"Karmam gehana gati"...Karma is a very complex theory and it is not as easy as 1+1=2, otherwise humans would have understood it by now that doing bad brings bad and doing good brings good....and the world would have been a better place.

Maya shakti keeps the karma under her control... but our present day deeds may affect them or may not...as in some cases results of good deeds are kept pending by Maya for next births.

for example if a person is very bad now, but has done lot of good karma in previous births...Nature will start finishing his good karma fast... even his this birth's good karma will give instant results.... thus leaving his bad karma for next birth for more severe punishment

If there is a good man who has lot of bad karma in his last births, nature would start giving results of his bad karma fast...and his this birth's bad karma will give instant results... because nature is preparing a good next birth for him, with all positive karma

That z why most of the cunning and bad people enjoy more in life, and good people suffer.

If one has progressed on the path of spirituality, his karma results are taken over by God, and he decides what to give and what not to give.

BUT this is certain, if we are seriously progressing on the path of Dharma, results of our bad karma are diluted and we may get lesser punishement... .sometimes in dreams even.

The Karma and rebirth are two sides of same coin. One can not exist without the other. It is the basis of Hinduism.
The effects of Karma can not be avoided.
My mother used to say that we are like a cow tied with a long rope in a grassy meadow. You can not escape the rope but the length can be changed. By the grace of your present actions the rope can be extended for a comfortable life.
bhagavad giitaa kijnchidadhiitaa
gangaa jalalava kanikaapiitaa
sakridapi yena muraari samarchaa
kriyate tasya yamena na charchaa

Let a man read but a little from the Gita, drink just a drop of water from the Ganga, worship Murari just once. He then will have no altercation with Yama.

Yes ! There are past lives. Each life involves birh, death, old age and disease.

What ever u do in this life effects the next life u get. If one is devout devotee of the Supreme Personality of Godhead Krishna and if he has led an austere life following the scripture Bhagavad Geeta and the Srimad Bhagawatam then he is sure to get rid of the cycle of birth and death.

Depending upon the good and bad things u do in the current life the body of the next life is decided. Yes we are helpless, because by mistake we have choosen to live in this material world. All of us being the children of God we were all happily living in the world of God known as Golok Vrindavan. But , since Krishna gave us the independence of choosing where to live, we like fools choose to live in this material world. Having come here most of us have forgotten that we are children of God and that we need to go back to Golok Vrindavan.

Yes ! there is a way out. One should do the following to be able to get released from the cycle of birth and death.

1. Get up early in the morning and perform the Mangar Aarti at 4.30 am daily.

2. Stop eating non vegetarian food (eggs, meat, beef, chicken, fish or any other animal)

3. Stop indulging in intoxication ie, stop drinking liquor, tea or coffee, coke, no smoking.

4. No gambling ie, no indulgence like playing cards or participation in stock markets, or horse racing.

5. Read the Bhagavad geeta every day at least for one hour.

6. Listen to the pravachan (lecture) of Spritual Master every day for at least one hour.

7. Asscociate with sincere devotees. Follow the instructions of Spiritual Master

8. Stop eating onion and garlic.

The belief of Karma is that it is equally distributed through out the universe. It hits on the points that everything maintains balance naturally. So in saying that when we die the good and bad that we intentional or unintentionally cause other people will naturally balance itself throughout the community. If we seek forgiveness and are genuine then the person we seek it from will probably feel something leaning towards good or bad. When we die the peoples whose lives we have effected will remember us. And while some say prostitution is the oldest profession, I believe judging is

Yours' is a philosophical question.
You will not get an answer in a few words.
You must have faith in your religion and in God.

Hindu religion says it is 'Karma'.
The soul takes birth and re-births until it is cleansed of past
deeds of good and bad. It is said soul attains perfection
once it becomes free from 'Karma'
Sages say it takes thousands of years for a soul to achieve
this freedom.

What can I feel about it ?
Let us follow our religion. That is what I would say.

the karma is true, the past births are true. otherwise it is difficult to make sense of this world where somebody is born rich, somebody is born poor, somebody is born well structured, somebody is born deformed. there is too much of randomness.

in a universe which is devoid of randomness and full of logic and reasoning it is difficult to beleive that where humans are concerned there is randomness.

so how do we answer this q?

the past karma channels your present. you are where you are, what you are, how you are by the past karma. but unlike animals, which just do their actions by fixed timings....mating seasons, eating and sleeping times etc etc etc, we have been given a brain to think, act and react. to reason. to argue.

while reasoning, we always will arrive at crossroads. we make choices and select the path we want, further incurring karma. does it mean karma is endless, an infinite circle?

through our choices, if we surrender unconditionally to the supreme being, to become one with brahman or atman, we cannot further incur karma. we do not have to continue with the cycle of births and rebirths.

if we are poor or deformed or born into a not very pleasant set up, were our actions so bad? may be they were. but the karmic cycle ensures you do not remember "a thing about the past" except in rare circumstances. this is to enable you to concentrate on this life and break the karmic past.
a kinda of level playing field.

Yes, undoubtedly.Evidences are there for past and future life( Stevenson, Moody). It will have effect right now, what all we have is because of that. But you are not helpless, by good conduct and invoking God's blessing(spiritual practises) you can overcome the ill effects to a large extent.Human effort and God's grace is the need of the hour for your NOW!

We have both the karma and free will. Karma is what that determines the things in store for us. However, the free will is what equips with the faculty to deal with the karmic effects. You accept it and work out the karma. With your free will, you do things that might counter balance the karmic effects. You may seek divine intervention for dealing the karma. A guru may also help you to deal with the karma or with his grace seek the ill effects of the karma wiped out. I do not therefore agree that destiny or karma is unalterable. It does not work in a reg id and uncompromising way.

Past good and bad karma (thought , speech and deeds) will give us good and bad situations in the present and future. Ripe group of Karma (Vipak) give us body (Jati), age (Ayu) and good-n-bad situation/things (Bhoga).

We have control over accumulated* and current* karma, provided we use fructifying karma correctly. You can do good Karmas to nullify bad karmas. Also based upon past good and bad deeds, will get good and bad situations, but our reaction is what we can control.

* Note : Categories of karma as can be explained via Bowman's analogy -

1. Accumulated (Sanchit karma) : The bundle of arrows in the quiver.

2. Fructifying (Prarabdha karma) : The arrow shot, which can not be recalled.

3. Current (Kriyaman karma) : The arrow, which is about to shoot from the bow.

Every force has equal & opposite reaction. This is karma, called cause & effect. We may not be aware of past & karma acquired in present life.
One has to meditate, cry , pray to reduce your sufferings.
God forgives if U knock.

They will definitely have their effects. But you can modify those effects by your own present deeds. You are certainly not helpless. Even a convicted murderer has right of appeal and petition for mercy.
