My dog was just lying down, in her bed, and then all of a sudden, she looks like she is choking. I really do not know how dogs cough, does this sound like a cough to you? She was at home all day, and was not near any other dogs. But she seems fine for one second, then the next, it is back to that hacking/coughing/sneezing sound. I am worried and do not know how I can stop this. All of our vets nearby are closed (It is 4:00 am here), so please do not tell me to drive to one. I just want to know what the problem could be, and how I can stop it. Please no rude answers, i just want to find out what is wrong with my 7 year old.

I dont understand when people ask if they should take their dog to a vet for something that is wrong. If you think you need to, then do it!!! Waiting for a answer on here could cost your dog its life!! If you dont know what to do, then you shouldnt own a dog!!!!!

Sounds like a reverse sneeze to me also. Very common in dogs. They are actually inhaling air in, not coughing it out. It's pretty dramatic to watch and only lasts a few seconds, then the dog is fine.
You could check with your vet if you're worried, but it doesn't sound like an emergency. And by the way, legally all vets must have an emergency number or referral hospital when they are closed, so you can get somewhere if you need to.

First, could she have possibly gotten hold of anything that could be caught in her throat? Most likely a bone, but even a piece of a rawhide or something off a chew toy? Check around for that possiblity first.

Now dogs do a weird situation like you describe to basically clear their throat and nose like humans. It can get your attention the first time you witness this. I have a big pack but only one does this from time to time. I do remember way back whenever when I first saw a dog doing this--scairy. And they may do this repeatedly just like we humans can get a coughing/sneezing spell.

Think real hard about anything new in your home that could be irritating her nose/throat. New room spray, fireplace going, even a real Christmas tree, etc.

Normally this will not just go on and on. If that is what is happening--like if you had a real bad cold-then she needs to be seen as soon as can. For now keep her calm. Try massaging her throat to see if eases the coughing. Put your ear to her chest and listen for her breathing(lungs). If you hear a raspy sound or like hard to breathe then that is more urgent.
It could be change in weather, too hot in house now, need a humidifier (air too dry/warm). Wish could tell you more, not a vet. Years of being in canine rescue.

everyone here will just tell you to take her to your vet. If you really love you pet and your a responsible pet owner, you wouldn't even be asking this question, you would have already taken the dog to the vet. I asked a question and that's all I got. Nothing but people wanting to put me down for asking a question. So Good Luck. but, my dog does that sometimes, it almost sounds like my dog as asthma. The vet checked her out and said she was fine, so when she does that I just try and calm her down, and talk to her until she is breathing OK. Good Luck, I hope all is okay!!!

It totally sounds like reverse sneezing but like other posts have told you that happens usually in short mussled dogs. My s h it-zus do it all the time but if you have had your dog for 7 years and it has never before done this I would check its mouth and try to keep it calm untill the vet clinic is open . I would deffinitly not wait longer than that . It could have something in its throat from before and you wouldn't know it . Dogs have been known to swallow crazy things. And things like christmas tinsle or strings from rope chew toys could sit part way in there throat not killing them but deffinitly eratating them. Good Luck I hope she is ok

The dog needs to go to the vet. Why are you online asking strangers? If your first instinct isn't to take the dog to the vet, you shouldn't have a dog to begin with. You need to find the nearest emergency animal clinic and at least call them but you should take the dog there. It needs medical attention now! If it were you that were sick wouldn't you go to the vet?

She could not catch a cold form you.

She could have a respiratory infection. Dogs get that sometimes. Call your vet tomorrow and ask about it.

She also could have inhaled something that is irritating to her.

If it's a reverse sneeze, it's nothing to worry about. A lot of small dogs get do that.

She could be REVERSE SNEEZING -
It's very common in brachiocephalic dogs (short muzzled)
No one knows why it happens but it is common in the winter!
It's absolutely nothing to worry about and usually goes away on it's own, if that's what it is.
Or perhaps she has hair stuck in her throat she is trying to get rid of.
As usual, call your vet if it keeps up.
Good luck!
you can find lots of information on reverse sneezing on the internet if you want to read more about it.

it depends what type of dog.... some dogs like pugs and puggles have lung breathing problems and start randomly couching and panting. u just have to pat their back with some force until it stops bu if its a different kind of dog i would for sure call some sort of animal doctor immediately. my dog was doing that once and thank god i called a vet immediately because the couching turned into a seizure

ya i agree with the rest take her to a vet... thats all you can do, people on here arent gonna know whats wrong and i think u shouldnt own a dog if you dont know how to take care of it... if its something you have never seen or heard before you should take them to a vet not wait for answers on here like the other people said your dog could be dead by then... so just please be smart and do the right thing and dont be dumb and ask a stupid question on here that you already know the answers to ok... thank you
