It is pretty much impossible to do. About the only way it happens is if there is some type of obvious error on paper. I was discharged without proper procedure. So all the paper work was missing. Instead of saying "your discharge was wrong because of the failed procedure" they said oh your records must just be missing.
One thing to remember is the reason you got kicked out of the service, or got a general discharge is probably still there. If you hated the service you probably wouldn't like it if you were able to go back in. There are still illogical things about the service that sometimes we can't get over.
At the time I was broke. I think I would have got the upgrade if I could have afforded to go before the discharge review board with the guy from the local VA. He was sure I got screwed. If you do it by paper only you have no chance of winning.

The reason this all started,
Is because in the early 1980's, the drug testing lab most often used by the military, was later found to have been incompetent.
They had shotty record keeping, way to many false positives and generally didn't know what quality was.
So anyone who was separated from the service, soley based on a failed drug test, tested at that lab.
Were allowed to either rejoin the military, or have thier discharges upgraded.
Now people just assume, that after several years, they can get thier discharge upgraded.
And thats just not true.
You have to prove that your discharge was unfair or to harsh to get it upgraded.

It depends on what event or action caused you to become discharged in the first place. If your part in the event was questionable and there is an ongoing investigation into the matter then perhaps light may be shed on your true actions (if they were actually honourable) and you may become honourably discharged.
This is very rare, usually people are discharged for a good reason.

Yes, nearly impossible. It is a common myth it is relatively easy, "all you have to do is...." type thing. However the fact is you MUST justify why it should be changed to honorable base SOLEY on your service record. Your discharge type is base off of a board review in the first place. These are not easily changed, and require proof of a wrong decision which is rare.
You do this by submitting to Bureau of Correction or Board of Appeals to attempt to do this, and to whoever wants to good luck.

Yes. You have to go through a long appeals process and have extremely good reason to ask for the upgrade. Such a change is rarely granted. My suggestion would be not to mess with it, because additional information may come out that the review board feels justifies downgrading it to dishonorable instead. That happened to an acquaintance of mine a few years ago. I rather suspect you would not want that to happen to you, eh?

ask John Kerry ... we think that's what he did, but he won't actually tell us what his discharge status was before he got it changed.
