I would like to purchase the 60gb so that I can play both the PS1 and PS2 games that I already own however I would like to know if I should be aware of any problems or issues with the Japenese version. I can get it considerably cheaper.

The above answer is great (never heard of censorship thing!). However, more tech details. The region for Japan is NTSC J and for US - NTSC U/C. PS3 games are region free, PS1/2 games aren't. BTW, there is a difference in online features too. Japanese PS3 have an extra online feature, but it's only for japanese residents. Remember - you won't have an official warranty if your console is an unofficial import. As for other accessoires - they are compatible with all versions.

Japanese PS3 does not support American/Canadian/European PS1/PS2 game discs... same with US PS3, it does not support Japanese/Asian PS1/PS2 game discs... both would still follow standard DVD region codes from their previous iterations (PS1/PS2) however, both versions share the same region for Blu-ray games and movies... so that means a Japanese PS3 would play US Blu-ray games and movies, and a US PS3 would play Japanese/Asian... BUT, if you can get hold of a US one, do get it because Japanese units have censorship issue (e.g. certain games does not have blood effects, etc.)
