good quality is never cheap. decide what you want and start from there. log on to Edmunds.com and you can check prices for any make, model or year. also look at reviews by owners and pros.

Craigslist, if it's big in your area.
Buy from a private owner, not a dealership.
Get a mechanic you trust to look at it.
A Japanese car will cost significantly more just because it's Japanese. American cars are just as good.
