heh.. I have a 6 month old JRT/beagle. She can chew through a bully stick or busybone two times faster than a full grown large breed dog lol.
The key is just exercise more. JRTs love agility, and are very good at it because they are tunnelers and climbers, and fearless. That can get alot of their energy out and take care of the mental stimulation too. So if i were you, i'd look into agility first, it will also help strengthen your bond so obedience is easier.
This isn't the breed that can easily entertain themselves in my experience...so you have to just do it...search for agility, or doggy centers, anything to help their high mental and physical needs.
To stop their chewing everything and hyperness, you have to give them other things to do, thats the only solution.
And about the shedding, dont know if yours is a rough coat, but they need to be hand stripped (by someone who really knows how to do it) about twice a year.
Read other jrt's owners on dogster too for more help and ideas

Oh one more thing that might help, i give my dogs their chew toys (kongs, nylabones, bullysticks, etc) ONLY at night time, and i take them away when they go to bed then take them out again at night. during the day, they have their frisbees, balls, squeakers(though the JRTmix chews right through all squeakers easily), plush toys, and any other toy thats NOT an edible chew or has anything edible about it. this kind of helped but see if your jack can handle it lol..and I hope you get into agility or something fun with yours! hope this helped.

You bought a breed that is hyper for most of it's life! And they always shed. Dogs, especially terriers, love to chew. Crate train him so he can't chew on things when you aren't around. Let him know what he can and can't chew on--you have to be there to teach him that. Have lots of safe chew toys for him. My terrier is 14 and still loves to chew.

Ours chews but he TRIES to only chew his own things. He has a squeaky squirrel and rabbit, but sometimes he'll pick up one of my daughter's stuffed animals and look at me like..."Is this one okay?" He has his own 'toy' box so he knows what's his, but he tried to stuff her bear into it once...looked at me and took it back out as if because it WAS in his toy box, it was his now.
I've lost a couple of pacifiers to him, too...but for the most part, if we tell him it isn't his and give him something that IS his...he understands it.

my parents have a 3 year old Jack and I have a 3 month old Jack. my parents dog chews as much as mine, she hes been trained to chew her toys only. she has alot of toys...a big variety so she can choose from soft to hard. they are always going to be hyper as they are a very active breed of dog. plenty of exercie and again...plenty of toys to keep it busy.
