I'm going to be in a situation tomorrow where I would normally FREAK OUT (being in a small house which will be overly crowded with people and screaming kids). My doctor gave me Xanax and I'm just not sure that it will really help me. I get really nervous about being in this type of situation and I really worry about getting sick because I tend to get migraines in this type of situation. Do you think the Xanax will help?

I have suffered from social anxiety for years. It gets worse as you get older. Like you, when I'm in a crowded, small space, my heart pounds and I start to sweat. My next response is that I want to run out as fast as possible. You need to learn some breathing exercises to help you relax. Every time you can confront a situation and overcome it, you will be more confident and less likely to panic. I know it's difficult when you feel like everyone is watching you, but you must try to relax tonight and not worry. I lived for years with anxiety and I let it ruin my social life. I took anti-depressants and valium. I hope you can do some breathing exercises and learn to relax. You can overcome your anxiety without drugs. Practice your relaxation.

Xanax For Anxiety

Well, it's in the same class of drugs as Klonopin and Klonopin worked like a charm for me. I have panic and social anxiety disorder and going anywhere crowded or just thinking about it would send me into a spiral of panic attacks and self-consciousness. When I took the Klonopin I actually cried because I was able to walk around the mall like I used to before this damn disorder. I not only didn't have any panic attacks but I also was extremely confident. I struck up conversations and actually walked with a little strut..lol. I never would have been able to do that before. At one point, I wouldn't even leave my house because the panic attacks had gotten so bad (agoraphobia) and after taking that one pill I felt like I did before I even knew what a panic attack was. It wouldn't hurt to try but be forewarned. Benzos like Xanax and Klonopin can be addictive and most people get really drowsy until their bodies get used to it so they're not meant for long-term use. Good luck!

How should I take Xanax?

Take Xanax exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Never use alprazolam in larger amounts, or for longer than prescribed. Tell your doctor if the medicine seems to stop working as well in treating your symptoms.
Alprazolam may be habit-forming. Never share Xanax with another person, especially someone with a history of drug abuse or addiction. Keep the medication in a place where others cannot get to it.
Misuse of habit-forming medicine can cause addiction, overdose, or death. Selling or giving away this medicine is against the law.
Do not crush, chew, or break a Xanax extended-release tablet. Swallow the tablet whole.
Call your doctor if this medicine seems to stop working as well in treating your panic or anxiety symptoms.
Do not stop using Xanax suddenly, or you could have unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Ask your doctor how to safely stop using this medicine.
If you use this medicine long-term, you may need frequent medical tests.
Store Xanax at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
Keep track of the amount of medicine used from each new bottle. Xanax is a drug of abuse and you should be aware if anyone is using your medicine improperly or without a prescription.

Another prescription i take is not really supposed to be taken with Xanax, so i had a small dose. I have a huge fear of needles, and haven't had any shots in 10 or so years. My most recent costor visit i took a Xanax an hour before the appointment and I was able to get two shots (yay! er.... kinda...) I still had a mild panic attack, but it still helped me.

Does Xanax Work

You won't know till you give it a try. I don't take tranquilizers or any prescription mind-altering drugs, so I can't say for sure. But from what I've seen in TV advertisements, all of the newer prescriptions, including those taken for anxiety or depression, have side effects that are even worse than the condition being treated. However, everyone is an individual, and what works for some, may not help others, and some people are not bothered by side-effects. So the best thing you can do is try the medication, and hopefully it will work for you. If it doesn't, let your doctor know and he or she can give you something else. A lot of times, it's trial and error. Good luck, dear. And don't forget, if things get too uncomfortable for you, with or without the drug, you can always make up some excuse and leave the crowded, noisy house.

Hi there...I have been taking Xanax for years. I have severe anxiety from my OCD. I am on the maximum dosage you can get. It has been very effective in helping me with my anxiety and that feeling that you get when you feel like you are going to climb the walls or jump out of your skin.

Xanax can be very sedating since it is in the benzodiazepam class of drugs. It's meant to slow you down. If you find that the Xanax isn't strong enough you can add a dosage of Benadryl to it to make it more effective. I learned that trick on my own and the pharmacist confirmed that Benadryl does make it stronger...

Xanax will not stop a migraine. I like Zomig and Maxalt for when I get migraines.

It works almost instantaneously. I consider it a wonder drug. I couldn't live a normal life without it, because I have neural damage and its the only thing that helps my attacks, which aren't panic attacks at all, but a complication from my nerve damage.

It is not only affective against anxiety, but also helps other things such as siezures.

Xanax only makes you sleepy if you are not active or slow down. Typically, if you are active and drinking say coffee, you shouldn't get too sleepy.

Make sure you stay away from alcohol while using it.
