My husband of 5 years is bi-polar 11. What does it mean when he has racing thoughts and is having risky sex? Does he also have homosexual encounters? He will leave me over-night and come home the next day, looking refreshed with a shower and his hair combed, but he doesn't even have a comb with him. What is he doing all night? Do they like prostitutes and kinky sex?

It's bi-polar II (as in roman numeral 2). What that diagnosis means is that he suffers from depressive episodes (feeling hopeless, sad, perhaps suicidal) alternating with hypomanic episodes. Hypomania is usually characterized by difficulty sleeping, irritation, increased energy, and racing thoughts. A manic episode (which he would not have, being bipolar II) might involve risky sexual behavior, delusions, feeling on top of the world, poor judgment (gambling away life savings) etc. It's possible that he's having an affair, but that doesn't mean that his bipolar II diagnosis is to blame.

Sounds to me like your husband is using his disorder as a way to get you to excuse his disgraceful behavior. I was diagnosed with Bi-Polar Disorder when I was 18-years -old. I am now 25. Yes, I have done some very stupid things when I have been in manic states, but I have never used my disorder as an excuse, and I have always accepted the responsibility for my actions. There were a couple of times when my own mother tried to blame some of my actions on my being Bi-Polar, and I refused to let her do that as well. I am an adult, I know the difference between right and wrong - just because I am not in what is considered a "normal" state of mind at that particular time doesn't mean that I can use my mental illness to get myself out of trouble. I have accepted the responsibilty for once stealing and joyriding in a car, I have at one point in time gone on a shopping spree and went crazy with my check book and spent a short amount of time in jail after most of those checks bounced - at the time I was manic, but I still was in the right mind to know there was no money in that account, yet I did it anyway, because at the time I was being stupid and I just didn't care. However, when it came back to bite me in the rear, I sucked it up, admitted that I was fully aware of what I was doing at the time and paid my debts and served my time. If I can do that between the ages of 18 and 25, then I am sure your husband can do so at his age.

You need to step back and look at the big picture and realize that the things that your husband are doing have nothing to do with the fact that he has a mental illness, it has to do with the fact that he thinks he can do as he pleases and there will not be any repercussions because you know he suffers from his "disorder."

Just because someone has Bi Polar disorder doesn't mean that they should be excused from having to take responsibility for their bad decisions regarding sex. I have bi polar disorder and I am very careful and I would never cheat on anyone I was exclusive with. That particular behavior has nothing to do with the disorder and don't let anyone tell you any different. Increased libido is a symptom however one still can choose not to act on impulses.

Bipolar 2 does cause ups and downs , I have mixed states bipolar which is another name for bipolar 2 where there are sudden ups and downs would I ever do something like this no way- somethings are uncontrollable - But if you really do not want to do something you will not do it So to blame the "Kinky sex and prostitutes" on bipolar 2 you cannot do that
