I bought my 60 GB PS3 this February. Just wondering, is my PS3 Blu-Ray ready? Or are there any cables, or anything that I need to buy first?

Well not exactly. It is "Blu-ray ready" but not HD ready. You need a HDTV (obvs) and you need component or HDMI cables in order to get an HD picture. The cables that come with the PS3 are composite and give horrible picture (480i). HD is 720p, 1080i and 1080p. (1080p is "True HD") So although the PS3 is ready to go, you need component or HDMI cables in order to get the best picture.

If your TV is 720p/1080i then you want either Component, which is cheaper, and gives a slightly worse picture (but barely) or HDMI which is the best cable possible to have. If you have a 1080p TV then you want the HDMI cable so you can get the best picture.

So, you need Component or HDMI cable, and a HDTV (In order to watch Blu-ray, you need a HDTV), regular non HD TVs do not work with some Blu-ray movies, but PS3 games work on any TV

Here are the cables if you do not know what I'm talking about:

Composite (AV): http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/3189440/2/istockphoto_3189440_audio_video_cable_isolation.jpg
Component: http://marknelson.us/attachments/tvisto-3500-review/component-cable.jpg
HDMI: http://www.joytech.net/images/products/125-HDMI-Cable-XT1080.jpg

I should warn you, make sure that is you buy Component cables, that one end fits into the PS3, there are special "PS3" Component cables that are good quality and i reccomend them, you can buy the anywhere this is what they look like: http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10097596&catid=#

I dunno whats wrong with everyone who's answering, they must not be very informed, the 40,60,80gb PS3's do not come with HD cables, they come with composite cables that do not provide good picture, I mean you could watch the Blu-ray movie with the included AV (composite) cables, but then you might as well be watching a DVD...

Hey there Tom I can only see 2 out of the selection 1) the PS3. 2) HD ready TV The other I would forget about for the following- MacBook, if you wait a couple of months the price will drop and it will be out-of-date by the time you get it home. Standalone Blu-Ray Player - Leave well enough alone (there the best part of a £1000) and no one knows if Blu-ray or HD-DVD will win. Now the TV vs PS3. As you have said, your 14, I would in your case go for the PS3, as you will get more enjoyment out of it then a TV. Based on you having enough for a Blu-ray player you will no doubt be able to get a PS3 with a few games and maybe a smaller LCD HD ready TV. Giving you the best of both world. Happy shopping.
