1.Lo How a Rose E'er Blooming,
From Tender stem hath sprung,
Of Jesse's lineage coming ,
As men of old have sung;
It came, a flow'ret bright,
Amid the cold of winter,
When halfspent was the night.

2. Isaiah 'twas foretold it,
The Rose I have in mind,
With Mary we behold it,
The virgin mother kind;
To show God's love aright,
She bore to us a Savior,
When halfspent was the night.

3. O Flower, whose fragrance tender
With sweetness fills the air,
Dispel with glorious splendour
The darkness everywhere;
True man, yet very God,
From Sin and death now save us,
And share our every load.

The writer of this song, "Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming", was using poetic language to describe Jesus. It's a beautiful song, especially with Praetorius' arrangement. I don't think the Old Testament ever calls Jesus a rose, specifically, but there are a lot of prophecies about Him. Enough for this reply.

BTW, the Blue Letter Bible website (http://www.blueletterbible.org) has a section devoted to the Christmas season. If I'm not mistaken, you can even listen to the song!--but check it out, first. Our computer doesn't play sounds except the "song of the cooling fan" due to a zonked sound card.

*EDIT* way back in the mid-70's, the Christian college I was attending had this very song as part of our Christmas program. I had never heard this song before that time, and have loved it ever since!
