Sorry if I did not put what I was saying in the right way..My point was that this person who was in an accident, and made it out okay had a grandmother, who was an athiest herself, so she DID NOT believe in ANY GOD right. Now she tells this grandchild that GOD was watching over him and that is why he made it though the terrible accident. So what do you tell this person, if your the grandma and he hears you say, "GOD was watching over you!" When in fact, she does not believe in any GOD? My question to everyone is...How would you explain being an athiest, and not believing in GOD, and yet you have said GOD was with you? What do you tell this grandchild whom has heard that grandma doesn't believe in GOD? Does GOD just exist in that moment in grandma;s mind? I hope I have worded what I am saying better this time! Thanks everyone :)

Most atheists were raised as believers, but stopped believing at some point. More than likely the grandmother was raised with some kind of religious influence. Even if she fell away from it as an adult, I don't find it difficult to understand how a part of her might fall back into after a scare like an accident. Because most people were not raised atheists, she was probably not always an atheist.

While on the other hand, someone who has NEVER believed and was not raised in it at all, not even a little, would be unlikely to do that.

I tell the person it's too bad this god is so incompetent that it couldn't save all the other people who have died in accidents, many probably more deserving than myself. Then I ask why is she talking about an imaginary character that she doesn't believe in as if it was real?

It's sounding like grandma isn't an atheist; I can't imagine an atheist saying that.

Maybe she does believe in god and isn't an athiest. Maybe she's agnostic. Maybe she changed her mind when the child got into that accident. Maybe she claims athiesm but really believes in god in her heart. Maybe it's just something to say. I don't think it's going to harm this child though one way or the other.

A moment of panic, a head injury, she may have quietly been religious all along, there are any number of explanations.

What I don't understand is how the grandmother arrived at that conclusion AFTER the young woman had suffered a severe spinal injury.

Okay, this is better how are they so sure she was an Atheist? Agnostics are often clumped with Atheists or she could have more recently declared Atheism or was reverting back to theism, I still feel that this story is dubious and would like a source.

My explanation would be that *some* people will become momentarily delusional when they're very afraid, and that it's not a reflection of they're every day beliefs. (Though someone who does might be slightly more waffling in their beliefs than others.)

people sometimes take the easy way with kiddies

I wouldn't attribute anything to a god myself but then I don't get to speak for all other atheists

perhaps it was a metaphoric slip under the stress of the moment . it's easy to use common expressions god only knows whether we seriously place stock in theistic believes or not.

She was a twit, that's all I can say. People do dumb things. The person to answer the question of why she said what she said would be HER; we can only conjecture.

F.Y.I -- the correct spelling is "atheist".
