We'd like to have our favorite Chinese restaurant cater, complete with at least two tea options. I'm making 1000 paper cranes to decorate with and incorporate into the ceremony. I will display the double happiness character in a few places. I plan to order fancy fortune cookies as favors (American tradition, I know). Is any of this specifically offensive for any reason? Is it a bad idea to combine elements from different cultures? As we are regular, friendly customers, I am especially concerned about making the restaurant staff angry or uncomfortable. Can anyone offer any tips or suggestions?

I think it all depends on your intent. As long as it's not mocking the culture, which I don't think a wedding would, it should be fine.

I think it would be nice to consult with someone who really knows about Chinese wedding traditions and explain that you want to incorporate some Chinese things into your wedding (explain what you like about the culture or why you want to do it) and they should be able to help you. Like any other culture, I am sure that there are certain things they hold especially "sacred" and other things that are just tradition. If you use something "sacred" make sure you get it absolutely right. You might even find a wedding planner who specializes in mixed culture weddings (it happens a lot more often now-a-days).
As far as not wanting to offend those at the restaurant, ask them how they wuold feel about catering your wedding. They may be able to help you with offering suggestions for traditional dishes and service or they may simply decline. No offense there. The owners will decide on what is best for their establishment and staff.

Just make sure your restaurant of choice caterers a lot . Catering which is literally picking up a restaurant and transporting it to a site is much different then being in their home kitchen and making meals for a few tables at a time. Some food will not travel well. If your reception is delayed for any reason and they cook the food on time your food will be very well traveled. As far as offending anyone. Nothing you've mentioned so far seems in any way offensive. You can ask !!!when you have a meeting with the restaurant owners if anything seems off base or if they have any suggestions.,

I get that you want to do something fun, but it will be weird if there's no context for it. Like - did you meet and fall in love at a Chinese restaurant? If there's no context that has it make sense, it just ends up being weird to people. It's not just a party. A wedding and reception is an expression of the real life of the bride and groom. Not just a theme party - which you could have at any later time and people could get it as just a theme party.

You COULD cater Chinese, and maybe incorporate some ethnic party favors. But I suggest you have the decor, clothing, and rituals be more a reflection of your race and religious or spiritual beliefs.

Just my opinion.

As long as you don't try to dress in Asian ceremonial dress, try to say your vows in Chinese or disrepect the culture than it shouldn't offend anyone including the staff of your favorite Chinese restaurant. It will be up to the owners if they will make the business decision of catering your ceremony. If you are a good and regular customer than it may be an honor for them.

Not a problem honey. The staff will be thrilled to have you. In the Chinese wedding, they too combine elements from different cultures. So not to worry. And furthermore, Chinese like it when different ethnic group appreciate their culture and food.

hope i helped! :)

Sweetheart its your wedding and you can choose whatever theme you want . No one should get offended at all . Do you know how many ppl have indian themed or caribbean themed weddings and they are not from the countries they are portraying at their weddings .. Its almost 2008 , if you're paying for it , screw what anyone else think or says. If they do not like it they do not have to come , its that simple.

Given that the reception is at a Chinese restaurant, I don't think that would be offensive.

It would be different if you were having your reception at a hotel with a western buffet.

I can't see why anyone would get offended. You appreciate that culture, and celebrating your wedding in that culture I think is very appropriate.

I think that it is a great idea. However if you fear that you will offend the staff, ask them for their opinions.
