Most cults generally have charismatic leaders that are highly skilled at manipulating people. They prey on people that are vulnerable, and they tell them what they want to hear. They promise them things, whether it be wealth, salvation, enlightenment, happiness, etc. They foster a sense of community amongst the followers, and the more sinister workings of cults are kept under a heavy veil of secrecy. Only those held in the highest trust are privy to these secrets. Also, they often find ways to test the loyalty of their members, and they remove those that aren't deemed to be entirely devoted and trustworthy. They keep close tabs on followers, and isolate them from people who aren't involved in the "organization." It's something of a divide and conquer approach.

People want absolute certainty. Cult leaders appear to have it, so rather than face a universe of ambiguity, people elect to follow them and surrender their own decision-making to them, giving up their choices in exchange for a world view in which they can be certain of pleasing God by simply believing what the leader tells them to believe and doing what the leader tells them to do.

People are so inadequate with themselves that they need to believe in a higher power and that this lifetime isn't it. Cult leaders give hope to these people and let them believe they are finally special to someone!

Cult leaders also use mind games, guilt, etc.
