i just bought a canon EOS 3000 SLR and it has a sigma lens, i haven't shot with it yet, but I was wondering if they are good quality. I also have a macro sigma lens that came with it. Should I upgrade lenses? I recetnly had a pentax k1000 with an orginal lens that i loved, are they similar at all?

Sigma produce reasonably priced lenses that are generally capable of producing good images.

However, they are not as good as the Pentax lens you were used to.

If I had money to spend on lenses I would not buy direct replacements for the Sigmas. Rather I would choose a different type of lens, IE wider angle, longer focal length telephoto etc.

The last lens I bought was a Sigma: 135- 400 mm zoom.

Compare a Canon L series to a Sigma, and the L series wins out. Compare the regular Canon, lens to a Sigma, and they usually tie. Some Sigmas are better, some Canon. Search the web for "Canon Sigma comparison" or "Canon lens review" - you'll find that many of the Canon lenses receive much lower rankings than the same Sigma. I have two L class Canons and three Sigma. The Sigma 8mm fisheye is fantastic. It really depends on if it's fixed, zoom, etc. If you can afford an L series, go for it - can't be beat. Otherwise, look at the reviews.

Sigma makes fairly good quality lenses - not on a par with Canon's "L" series, but much less pricey.

I have a sigma body and lenses and love it. Sigma has been a lens producer for a long time and builds a quality product.

Depends on the lens.

Go over to http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/index.html and read the reviews.

Then look at the User Performance Reviews to see what other people think.

If you want the Executive Summary instead, no matter which brand you choose, you get what you pay for.

Hope this helps.

Use the lenses and decide for yourself if they meet your standards. Chances are you'll be happy with their performance. If you aren't happy with them you can always list them on ebay.
