I'm trying to find out more about mass delusions and different psychological conditions that help me understand more about what's going on here on the planet Earth.
I can't believe what I'm seeing. I keep thinking I'm going to wake up and everyone will be sane, but it never happens.
More than half of the population of this entire planet is delusional. I feel like I'm in the Matrix. I can't believe there are so many people here who really and truly believe in gods. They aren't joking, they really do think this stuff is real.
I can't seem to wrap my mind around the immensity of it all. These people are completely and totally immune from any evidence or explanations to the contrary.
How did things get to this point?
How do we ever do anything about it, the problem is so huge?
I just cannot believe that almost the entire human race is walking around inside a terrible dream, and they won't wake up.
What will history say about the human species if they ever do wake up?

I asked this in the Psychology section, but I guess all the atheists are here, so here we go. This one is a serious question.
Looking for links
Especially in reference to this problem, and generally on things like shared psychotic disorder, delusional, disorder, mass delusions, schizophrenia, etc..

You're not going to find belief in God listed in the DSM-IV.

you may get more than what you asked for....you may want to post this question over on the psychology forum as well because you might get more legitimate answers about mass hysteria, group delusional states and the like. I took psychology in university but never really found the answers you are looking for, I have not found any evidence or explanations that contradict my faith in God. It's not an immunity I just haven't found any arguments that have been able to hold up against my personal relationship with God nor actually have I found any arguments that made any logical sense.

Your views are understood by our small community. The only person you can save is yourself. You cannot help the ones that are delusional. They are high on the drug of their choice. The only thing you can do is pass logic and reason the best way you can - write a book ...... You have to understand the fear they carry around with them waking and sleeping. Fear is a very potent drug, it drives men mad. The churches are exceptional at their psychology. They have been doing it for thousands of years and do it very well. It is difficult to fight them.

Case: Mother Theresa told her superiors that she had no feelings on the matter of religion. No matter how hard she tried she could not find herself believing. The church fathers told her that was her lot in life - to deal with with her faith, it was sometimes difficult for us as humans to understand god, but, she was assured it was pre destined for her and it is was her penance in this life. How do you argue with that?

You can't win. Try though you might.

Basically I consider it much like back when we'd have pep rally in school. Things like that are made to get people all riled up and pulled together and into what's going on.

Religion when mixed with getting all the believers together, singing songs, praising Jesus together, worshiping together, etc...same 'pep rally' kind of thing happening there... And it makes people easier to control.

Go to the link below, then follow the links on that page, as well as the rest of the site. It's very informative.

"Destructive cults, groups, movements and/or leaders "maintain intense allegiance through the arguments of their ideology, and through social and psychological pressures and practices that, intentionally or not, amount to conditioning techniques that constrict attention, limit personal relationships, and devalue reasoning." -- Margaret Singer, Ph.D.

Best book I ever read on the topic (and it includes lots of mass movement info) was called "The True Believer" by Eric Hoffer
