rudeness is sometimes necessary. Shut the f*ck up and get out of my sight you c*ck sucker, usually works!

In extreme circumstances try a swift flying kick to the head and the time for talking will definitely be over!..

If it's someone you don't know well, when they start to run on, wait for an opportune, interupt gently, and say something like "Wow, that's very interesting" and then change the subject. Do this whenever necessary and they shoud get the hint. They might not realize they're doing it or they might do it because they are uncomfortable with silence. If it is a close friend, you can pull them aside and tell them (again, gently).

Immediately express your intention verbally...
(Without been disrespectful) say that you are unable to indulge in the 'prolonging of conversation' due been in a hurry with other commitments and excuse yourself!
With your silence the speaker gains the empression that you have agreed to be listening to the talk!

Just be rude. Stop beating about the bushes. If that fails, slap them in the face with a wet fish.

James - thats still beating about the bushes, you have to be a lot ruder than that.

Ask them if they like to listen more than they like to talk.

(I have used this question with astonishing results. People tend to admit they talk more than they listen but they would LIKE to listen more and the question draws attention to the fact that they have to make a decision to listen and then shut up so they CAN listen.)

you don't do that...it is rude..if you need someone to be quiet because you need to listen to something for a minute then ask exactly that but otherwise you are being a misanthropist and should lock yourself away

How about telling the first guy who answered your question to shut up!!

Try using humor - something like this "When will it be my turn to speak?"

There was a song in the 1960s, went , "YOU TALK TOO MUCH
Recorded by Joe Jones on Roulette Records
45 RPM / circa 1960
YOU TALK TOO MUCH, you worry me to death,
YOU TALK TOO MUCH, you even worry my pet,
You just ta....a......a.....a....a....alk, TALK TOO MUCH.
You talk about people that you don't know, you talk
about people wherever you go,
You just ta....a......a.....a....a....alk, TALK TOO MUCH.
You talk about people that you've never seen,
You talk about people you can make me scream,
You just ta....a......a.....a....a....alk, TALK TOO MUCH.

You might learn it and sing it loudly at the appropriate time. LOL

It's easier to tell a group.
" Quiet ".

You could tell a person,
" You're talking to much ".
