It makes some people feel like they are important. Modern Christianity is sort of geared towards appealing to peoples' egos in some ways. The expression "personal savior" is a pretty good example of this.
When a Christian group tells people that they should accept Jesus as their "personal savior" it has an implied meaning that somehow the person is "special" enough to warrant having Jesus as something all their own.
Why put the word "personal" in the phrase? It is there because some evangelical preacher realized that adding that word made people feel more important, and that made them more likely to convert.
There are a lot of people that really don't have a lot about themselves that would allow them to believe they are important, or special, or better than others. However, if they convert to Christianity, then they have a group of people that will constantly stroke their ego by telling them that they are now one of the people that God has chosen to "save".
I think that a lot of people that convert to Christianity are unaware that they are doing it for these reasons, however. Basically, converting makes them feel better about themselves, but they attribute it to the "holy spirit" or something similar. They don't bother to examine their own emotional state and its underlying reasons well enough to realize what is really going on.
This is one of the reasons that some of them get so incredibly defensive when their religion is criticized. Basically, when someone criticizes their religion, that critic is actually attacking the whole foundation upon which the believer has built their ego. This causes the believer to automatically react in a hostile manner. The believer is lashing out in defense of their self worth.

The way I see it, accepting religion has actually nothing to do with any driving force. It is only when the individual has reached its level where it now opens its consciousness to higher and finer understanding of the realities of a more authentic existence because it is time. On the other hand, God's love is forever there waiting for those who are ready to accept what needs to be accepted to give significance to a level of existence.
Come to look at it in a wider perspective, the whole life journey of a soul is a process of becoming divine. One starts maybe with a state of the grossest ignorance of the spiritual realities and then journeys in one or several lifetimes to arrive at the finest state of holiness and commune with God.

It seems many people read "religion" in your question to mean Christianity, or at least monotheism. I'd say for any religion, it's the awareness of the divine, both the immanent (within us) and the transcendent (outside of us) and the desire to connect to that in a way that transforms us so that we live in greater harmony with the Divine. That would seem to cover everything from monotheism to pantheism.

I would say suffering is probably number one. Suffering of any kind, financial, health, mentally, loss of any kind, pain, etc.
All it takes for many people is for someone to hold out a carrot on a stick for them "Come and believe in this religion, it will take care of all your suffering and you will be saved!"
Look at the Televangelists sweeping across Africa now, holding massive Tent Revivals, pulling up in their limos and dripping diamonds and money. The Africans they are preaching to can't even afford shoes. Yet they are falling for it by the hundreds of thousands.
It's the same all over.

Our life has a void without some spirituality in your
life as we are made up of body, soul, and spirit. We
thirst for it and when we find a christian or a church
that helps fill that void, that is the driving force.... sometimes
just a friend telling us about their christian walk in life....
sometimes a fear of the hereafter.....sometimes a family
member dying makes us question life.....sometimes just
wondering how it all began.

Ignorance.
Ok, that sounded bad. I mean that religion offers answers to questions that we don't know the answers to, either because science has not developed enough to discover an answer/definitive answer, eg.creation, or because the questions will never have answers, eg.the meaning of life.

The inability of a small child to critically deconstruct it and make an intelligent and mature decision about it.
They start on them the day their born.
Poor little things don't have a chance.
We MUST find a way to combat this one thing if we ever expect to awaken the human species from their terrible dream...
