About two months ago we got a 2 year old husky. We also have two adult cats. The cats are terrified of the dog and never come out of the basement. On the accasions that they do come out my dog just chases them back down. How can i get them to meet and get along?

I doubt that you ever will at this point. If the husky was a very young puppy that was introduced into the house, maybe.

Huskies have a very high prey drive and will go after and eat anything that doesn't eat them first. Like the desire to run, this has been bred into them and can't be trained out. A puppy who is raised with a cat may very well consider the cat a member of it's pack and be best friends with it. The cat next door will still be lunch! But even if they act like best friends I would not leave them alone together.

I know that this not the answer you might have wanted but the best advice I can give you is keep them separated.

Huskies are known for their predatory drive. Cats, rabbits and other small animals are not safe around an untrained husky. Huskies can learn to get along with cats in the same household. Introduce them gradually one at a time and don't leave them together unsupervised until you are sure the dog will not kill the cats.

Huskies are such beautiful dogs. I'm no Cesar Chavez but maybe try putting them into a medium to small room together with no furniture (so the cats can't hide.) with the husky. The cats will be terrified at first but control the husky tightly with a leash. Make sure the cats don't hurt him either, they do have claws after all. Try this a few times to get them adjusted to each other. it will just take time and patience. I have a friend whose dog acts like a mother to the cats and licks them and nurtures them (but the dog was also raised since a puppy with the cats.) Good luck and I hope that helped.

this is never going to happen. there will always be bad blood between the cat and dog.
i had a german sheppard and a cat anmed tammy, and they never got along for 15 years they lived in the same house. eventually they were able to be within 3 meters of each other. but that took 6 months.

We taught our white lab not to chase a stray kitty that came around looking for food. (The person who used to feed the kitty moved.) It takes two people though. One to comfort & get the kitty to lay down or stay with out running. The another to teach the dog to be nice to the kitty. The second person makes the dog lay down & watch the kitty with out getting up to chese it. This took a month or so.

Huskies typically have fairly high prey drives. Personally, I would never leave them alone together.

Time may make them more tolerant of each other, but again, due to the prey drive inherent in most Huskies, I would NEVER trust one alone with my cat.
