on digital cameras and SLR cameras...what does the lens do for the camera

LOL. Without the lens, there'd be no way for the light to get to the sensor.

Lenses do everything from allowing a wide view (wide angle lenses) to telephoto (make objects far away look bigger) to close-up/macro shooting.

Some lenses are fixed at one focal length (prime lenses) while others "zoom" from one focal length to another (zoom lenses).

You can have a camera without a lens (called a pinhole camera), but for maximum versatility and effectiveness, you need a lens.
