You don't, unless you're a member of the board of directors.
But I wouldn't count on that either.

I give to The Northwoods Wild Life Center where I live, because I know my donation will be put to good use. There are no high priced salary's. The have interns in the summer.
Center takes care of injured wild life from squirrels, to Bald Eagles and Black Bear and the list goes on. They're non profit and keep going on donations. There objective is to release these animals back in the wild.

Will also give to Animal Shelters. They are run mostly by volunteers like the Wild Life Center.

These places are run strictly on donations. Donations can also be made in the Memory of someone you know or even your beloved pet.

There are so many places that ask for donations that I have finally found peace of mind knowing my donations will be used wisely. Can't give a lot, but every penny counts.

Everyone has their own joice's and that's a good thing. Some times you have to limit your joices.

Charities are required to make that information available on request. You can ask for a copy of their financial statement.

Most of the large charities end up using about 50% of the money they raise just to keep the orginization running. Only about 50% actually goes to the people it promises to help.

Some do better like the Muscular Dystrophy Association. I used to work for them and know about 75% actually goes to the children it promises to help.
