Seems to me, a christian symbol would want to stay away from 'fire' as it reminds one of hell.....or is it symbolic of something more abstract?

Acts 2:3 KJV
And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

It is probably a reference to the holy ghost as mentioned in this verse

I used to be Methodist. It is called the eternal flame or something. I forget exactly what it is supposed to represent. But I doubt it is the tongues of fire/tongue speaking thing as they were not a Pentecostal or tongues faith when I was in it.

I have heard they since turned that way, though.

All the different crosses are the brands of different pagan gods so it could be of a fire god...I will try to look it up again. Dad used to be a Methodist preacher and he might know.

Probably the Holy Spirit, as it appeared to the disciples in Acts 2:3.

The Holy Spirit... it cames as "tongues of fire" to the first believers at Pentecost.
