while you can use otc glucosamine for your dog, did you ever consider that sometimes pets do actually need prescription pain relievers?
for your dog you can give 500mg of glucosamine once daily.

Glucosomine/Chrondroitin. You'll have to call your vet for the dosage. You can get it at some drugstores buy one get one free so it's a good idea to get the largest bottles possible.Store them in the fridge.
The expensive crap from the vet will cause more problems in your dogs health than they are worth. My own vet prefers noty to give harsh drugs when a natural remedy is available. Results may take longer to notice but it's much better for the dog in the long run. There are many things you can give to a dog with arthritis but be careful because some have been proven to cause liver kidney and pancreas damage.Others are as yet undetermined in long term results as they have not been tested on animals. Stick to the tried and true for now. Keep a heating pad handy and apply it when needed and give 10 minute massages to the sore areas 3x a day.

My Vet gave a perscription for arthritis to us for our dog. The dogs a Husky and about13 yrs old. We give him 1 pill with food everyother day and he's good as long as we do that. Our Vet carries the pills and their cost isn't very high at all. I'mean, what would you pay if u had arthritis and wanted to be free of pain. Think about it.

I live in the UK and my dog has arthritus. My Vet suggested Flexadin and charged me £75 for this. Later I found the same stuff on the Internet for £25.
My dog is a GSD and is 33kg, it's too late at night for me to convert this into pounds. I tried lots of other things before I settled on Flexadin. Now after having problems coming upstairs she is chasing rabbits and doing agility again.
Look it up on the Internet.

Glucosamine/Chondroitin supplements can really help some dogs. Some prescription foods help, but I'm guessing you would consider those over priced too. Safest and most effective would be an anti-inflammatory/pain reliever from the vet.

Please do not buy any over the counter meds for the arthritis, call your vet, get her on Rymadryl, it is for joint pain, and especially arthritis,,,,,it is made for this...I had to put one of my Miniature Schnauzers on it for the same reason, he gets around so much better and I can tell he is not hurting....but once on it, don't stop the med....your vet will agree it is the best thing for this....good luck

Glucosamine is good for the joints.
There is an herb that you should research. It is called Boswellia. It works VERY well for arthritis and is very inexpensive. I buy the human grade at
http://www.swansonvitamins.com
I give it to my husband , but have also given it to a neighbors dog.

Aspirin treats the pain, swelling, heat, redness, and sometimes stiffness of the joint associated with arthritis.
After a meal you can give it to your dog. Calculate the ratio of how much according to his body weight.
