Which branch of paganism?

Simple story: the Oak king and Holly King fight for dominance at every solstice. One wins and winter is supreme, the other wins next and summer is dominant. Symbolic for the changes of the seasons.

There are also several pagan deities born in December: Horus, Perun, Mithra, and more. This directly influenced the late story of Jesus' birth.

Pretty much it's a celebration of the seasonal changes and gathering of family and friends.

The Legend of The Christmas Tree

Some say the modern day Christmas tree has its origins in the Pagan Yule celebration. Pagan families would bring a live tree into the home so the wood spirits would have a place to keep warm during the cold winter months. Bells were hung in the branches so they could tell when a spirit was present. Food and treats were hung on the branches for the spirits to eat and a five-pointed star, the pentagram, was placed atop the tree.

This really depends on what branch of paganism you are addressing. A general stereotype would be that many pagans see it as more of a celebration of the changing of the season and a asking for a blessing to help get through the winter in good health.

Do you mean why do Pagans celebrate the solstice? It's seen as the birth (rebirth) of the sun. After the winter solstice the days start growing longer again (meaning it's lighter out longer). There's more to it than this - but this is the short explanation.
